Wishing everyone Health, wealth, and prosperity in the New Year!

FYI - auntie said that there will be no DOTD today, she will be celebrating the Lunar New Year with family and friends today.

The Lunar New Year actually started with the new moon on Monday the 8th (starting the Year of the Monkey), but I guess the party can go on for days... Happy Lunar New Year everybody!

Yes, it started on Monday, but we celebrate for about a month.

We close the year anytime before the New Year starts, and open the year anytime after the year starts. Close and open year dinners are usually with family and friends. Dinner on NYD is usually vegetarian (the dish (Jai) is usually made ahead of time, so that the only needed to do on NYD is to heat it up), as you do not want to use anything sharp on NYD (you can cut your luck away). We usually eat a huge meal right at around 11pm the night before NYD. We need to visit friends, and family for the next month, and there is usually festivities in major cities (SF, NY, etc...). I will be doing the Chinese New Year Parade in SF on 02/20/2016, I'll be the float marshal for the McDonald's float, and my daughter will be one of the children on the float.

This is a very short list, there is many other customs which are to be adhered. It's a headache actually.

Xin Nian Kuai Le, Cul! Gong Xi Fa Cai to you and your family. (forgive my horrible "accent" I don't have the right keyboard for the proper accent marks if I could even remember them all) Hope you all enjoy your Dinner.

Gong Xi Fa Cai , Everyone! May this year be filled with happiness and prosperity for you and your families.

WOW!! I was WAY off on how long I thought New Year lasted. Most of my Chinese friends get 3-5 days off these days, and I always thought the original celebrations were about 15 days.

Cul, Hong Bao Na Lai (I will let you adopt me for the month ;) )

Have you all your Hong Bao filled appropriately for the person you are giving it too?

Well. companies usually gives us NO days off, Lunar New Year isn't a recognized holiday. So, any days off are usually planned out ahead using vacation, and/or PTO. That's probably why most of your Asian friends only have 3 days off, because any more than that and they'll need a medical note from their doctor.

I have the red envelopes ready for the children and my single friends. It's mainly just going through the motions at this point. I usually just give $5.00 to relatives kids, and $1.00 to everyone else.

Thank you for the well wishes, much appreciated.

Much health to you in the coming year, as well as wealth, and prosperity!

That's surprising! I have a week of holiday over here!

No, that is what I meant Cul, Not here in the US, I know that we don't get any days off without taking vacation. Taiwan and Mainland seem to get 3-5 days if what my friends get is usual. Sinkrate is confirming what my friends tell me. First week of the celebration is all they got off from work in Taiwan and in Jiangxi my friend there says most of his folks that work at "real jobs" (he is a artist) get a couple days only.

It surprised me too. I thought it was 15 days and everyone had the whole time off. But China is getting as "corporate" as the US these days.

Well Cul, I have no idea, but all we got is a week off! Back in the old days the holiday is way longer because transportation isn't that convenient, so a longer amount of time is required for people to go back to their hometown

Yes, that makes sense.

Happy new year! I'm going to have to eat through all this stuff on Saturday. Wish me luck....

It's customary to bring you own knife to these affairs, you gotta cut off the meat for yourself and your woman. As much as I love my HI knives, I always bring a Buck 119 cuz I'm 'merican!

 Buck 119 sure will get that job done. Looks like some incredible good food Blue, I think you are going to have to pace yourself with that :D

Whelp, now I know what every inner organ of the sheep tastes like. Lung's my favorite , tastes soft but rubbery

LoL, It is funny, I eat all sorts of things in various dishes. For instance my favorite Pho is the one with the yellow fat and the honeycomb style tripe. And I eat Haggis with my Scottish friends. But I can't stand the idea of eating the organs just plain. I really don't understand why, but that is just the way it is.

It's not something I'd eat every day but I definitely enjoyed it. Oddly enough, the kidneys tasted a lot like clams! Totally different texture though.

There's also a world of difference between fresh blood sausage and the store bought stuff. Fresh blood much juicier and more flavorful.
