Hope everyone here has a great new year! I had a pretty darn good weekend in the leather shop.

Can anyone guess the mystery leather on this sheath? It's not Elephant... and is by far the most exotic leather I've had my hands on so far. I think a holster will be in order out of this same hide too. Oh yeah, as you can see, I tried double stitching the whole thing just for grins too. Loving the Cobra Class 4. Should have made that purchase a long, long time ago.

This hornback gator 1911 holster really turned out nice as well.

I won't guess (cause ya told me in an email I think). Anyhoo very nice work. Looks like you got your tnison dialed in for sure on these projcects.

Holster looks great, but I don't think it's horn back…….more like belly and in this case belly is GOOD! Gator and Croc bellies have much more uniform and useful leather than the backs.

As to the mystery leather, looks like it could be Cape Buffalo.

Also you might look into using 207 thread top and bottom for a less bulky look in your stitching.

Thank you Dave! Much appreciated! Yes sir, got the tension dialed in on bottom and noticed I still had some pull up between stitches on the top (on lighter pieces say 6-10oz) so got bold and slightly adjusted the bobbin too. Now she's perfect! I'm so happy with this machine... can't even describe how nice it is to have it.

Thank you Paul! Excellent guess with the Cape Buffalo but this is actually Hippo. Very interesting leather and surprisingly easy to work. I think the reason the thread looks so bulky, especially on that sheath, is I actually double stitched the whole thing just to see what it would look like. I'm currently running 277 on top and 207 on bottom with the white thread. Just got some colors in and they're all 207 so I'll start running that on top and bottom.

On the gator, it's hornback but from a tail section of a small critter (27cm hide). It's hard to see the horns as they are not very pronounced. I learned that the hard way having bought a few gator hides and wishing I had nice square scales to use instead of the harder backs with horns and less uniformity. Oh well, live and learn right? Next time I'll be going for belly cut hides instead of the backs.
