Happy New Year, everyone! I hope 2011 is a great year for you and your loved ones. I thought it might be fun to come up with 2011 wilderness goals - let's face it, they're a lot more fun and likely to be done than your typical resolution. Skills to master, trips you want to make, that kind of thing.

Mine are:

-Develop cold-weather hiking proficiency to eliminate some of the concerns I have. This is kind of vague and personal, but includes mastering self-arrests, being able to assess avalanche dangers, being able to better read snow and ice conditions, and other points of novice mountaineering concern. I'll be taking some local, free classes on the subject and putting them to use on as many weekends as possible.

-Build a wood stove and a wood gasification stove. See first-hand how they work, design a few until I have made it as good as I can, and see if at the end of the day, it's something I can comfortably bring camping in some situations to replace the gas stove. I love the idea of bringing a light stove and using local fuel, so I'd like to learn for myself how well they can work.

Be safe and have fun in 2011!

Bow drill skills
Get into leather sheath making as a hobby
Continue to teach my young son bushcraft skills
Try to lighten my gearload a lot. I pack heavy :)

1. Learn how to dress a turkey
2. Work on friction fires
3. Less time on the forums, more in the woods

Continuing Plant identification is definitely the number one skill I want to improve on.

Happy New Year to all.

Mine are friction fires, pass on wilderness skills and knife skills to my children.

Yes, it's that time again.................:D

Hey John G, if you're talking about basket weaving using found natural materials (as compared to bought materials), this is the book to look for.

It's out of print, but as you can see it's available from the used book stores. It might take awhile to find an affordable copy, though.

Another option is finding it at a library and photocopying it.

Thanks Doc! I'll check the library first. I've actually had plenty of luck finding outdoor skill books there.

That's originally what I did, photocopy and all, but I really wanted the book, itself (shameless book junkie :o ) so I held on and it finally came up at a good price.

It is by far, the best book on the subject, and I have many. :o

JohnG, a couple of pictures of natural baskets in progress.

I still want to work on plant ID, and Nav skills.
But with allot of help from my cranky GP, I will learn some net making, and hopefully have my first cast net constructed by spring.

Oh and Knotts, I promised my self I will learn fancy knotts so I can sound more intellectual when I talk to my self about what I am doing...

Bookmarked it! Thanks again. Plus I have a few books with basket-making advice, including my brand-new copy of Wildwood Wisdom!
