Happy New Year, everyone! I hope 2011 is a great year for you and your loved ones. I thought it might be fun to come up with 2011 wilderness goals - let's face it, they're a lot more fun and likely to be done than your typical resolution. Skills to master, trips you want to make, that kind of thing.
Mine are:
-Develop cold-weather hiking proficiency to eliminate some of the concerns I have. This is kind of vague and personal, but includes mastering self-arrests, being able to assess avalanche dangers, being able to better read snow and ice conditions, and other points of novice mountaineering concern. I'll be taking some local, free classes on the subject and putting them to use on as many weekends as possible.
-Build a wood stove and a wood gasification stove. See first-hand how they work, design a few until I have made it as good as I can, and see if at the end of the day, it's something I can comfortably bring camping in some situations to replace the gas stove. I love the idea of bringing a light stove and using local fuel, so I'd like to learn for myself how well they can work.
Be safe and have fun in 2011!
