Happy New Years! I’m typing this waiting for a plane to Georgia right now, and just wanted to wish everyone a happy New Years. I won’t be able to post for a while being that the Army isn’t all to fond of phones during Basic Training. But, give it a few weeks and I will be back again and probably with some new knives.... it’s gonna be hard not having one for while.

Which brings me to the knife related part of this thread, what’s the longest you had to go without a knife in your pocket? For me it’s hard to think of a time that I didn’t have one for more than a few days. And if you have served, it would be cool to see or hear stories of the traditional knives you carried while in. The “porch” has made me feel very welcome in the time I’ve been visiting this forum and I would like to thank you all for that. My this year be a good one for us all.

Zach

Happy new year! The nine weeks I spent in boot camp for the Coast Guard was the longest period I ever went without a pocket knife. That was back in '79... May you be safe and strong, and do your best. Thanks for your service:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I guess it was the 8 week USAF basic training in 1971. I must admit I missed my cigarettes a lot more then my pocket knives.
Hope your army carrer is rewarding. Thanks for serving.

Thanks for signing up to serve our country, Zach!:thumbsup::cool: I hope the Army helps you "be all that you can be"!:thumbsup:;) (Do they still use that slogan??)

I got along without a knife in my pocket from the time I left the farm to go to college (17 years old in September 1969) until almost exactly 4 years ago (62 years old in January 2014), when my wife gave me a knife she'd gotten from her father and I decided to start carrying a pocket knife again.:D

Here's the knife that left my pocket for almost 45 years:

Here's the one from my wife (and father-in-law) that ushered me into my current knife obsession:

Godspeed to you Zach as you enter the Army! Thanks for serving. I carried as a kid but stopped after I lost my SAK in high school. I didn’t carry again until about ten years ago when I was in my mid twenties.

Thanks for your service! I went through all of high school without carrying a knife, because I was out of the scouts by then and couldn't bring my SAK to class. I picked the habit back up in college and since then have not gone more than a day without a knife.

Happy New Years! ...

Well, when I was in the Navy the Buck 110 was very popular, especially with the machinist mates. I really liked the look of them so I bought one and carried it for years afterward. (In fact, I was sharpening it just yesterday.) I don't think I ever carried it on the ship (submarine) though. About that time my wife gave me a Vic Woodsman (essentially identical to today's Huntsman but no tweezers or toothpick). I bought a Zermatt case for it and carried it on my belt. We were in a refueling overhaul and it came in handy in shipyard conditions. One day my ET1 showed up with TL-29s for everyone in the division. I don't recall ever carrying it much, but I still have it.
