1st I bought a Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk...

Then I bought an ATC VTAC... I was happy...

Then I started to throw the Cold Steel Tomahawk a lot, and broke the handle... now I was unhappy...

So I asked Cold Steel to exchange it for a Frontier Hawk (which they did), but I changed the original-length 19" handle to a cut-down 14" handle...

This made my Frontier hawk the same length as my ATC VTAC... I was happy again...

But... then I discovered that it didn't throw real well, I was unhappy again... I discovered that the original length 19" handle worked better for throwing... so I switched back to a 19" handle (notice the darker-colored new handle)...

Well... it throws much better now, so who cares if it is longer than the ATC VTAC... because I am happy again...

J.S. Carter,

Perhaps the 'family' will have 'new additions' soon, huh?

By the way, my wife likes tomahawks, too...
Here she is (closest to the camera, in the jacket) getting ready to throw...

And here she is executing a throw...

She likes to throw tomahawks, shoot guns, go fishing, etc. etc...
God was very good to give me such a wonderful wife!!!

I threw my Vietnam hawk a lot today. I can tell that is going to break or split right near the head at some point as well. That's really disappointing to me, as it is very enjoyable to throw. The shorter axis means I get more rotations before it hits the target compared to my Norse hawk. Any ideas for rehandling it in something durable? Maybe Vector can come up with something.

I asked Lynn Thompson (Cold Steel's President) to offer the Vietnam Tomahawk with a handle made from polypropylene, fibergless or nylon (black, of course)... and suggested he paint the head black, and have the same sheath, but also black... I told him I would want the 1st one, and he could call it the 'Vietnam Tomahawk II'... Maybe if enough people want it, he would offer it...

(Cold Steel should be able to have it manufactured for the same or less than the 'Vietnam Tomahawk'...)

Dammit, I broke mine too. I sent CS an email yesterday, but I don't expect to hear back from them until Monday. What's the replacement/repair/exchange experience like?

I called them, talked to Adam... he told me to send the tomahawk to them with a note explaining what happened... several days later, had an exchange!!! They are open to same-value exchange for something else, new-product exchange, etc... good people to work with!!!

Man, I don't know what I should do. I liked the design of the vietnam hawk, but I can get a crappy chinese hawk if I just want one to look at. I'd almost rather trade it for a spike hawk I can depend on.

Whoa, they've got the vietnam hawk listed for 59.99 on their site, so technically I could get $60 worth of CS in exchange? Sounds like I will snag a Pole axe and something else. Maybe a throwing knife.

Told him my family and I were hiking, and decided to informally throw it at the cut-off end of a very large fallen pine tree (which is true)... after it hit a half dozen times handle-first, it broke... sort of length-wise. It was no problem... I explained that Peter LaGana (the designer of the original) threw his all the time, so I was not doing anything inappropriate by throwing it... I had no problem getting an equal-value exchange (a Frontier Hawk and 3 spare handles)...

Hmmm, well Adam just told me that he'd send out a replacement handle for me and I can replace it myself. I get to keep the old one too, so I guess that means I can try fitting it to a more robust haft.

Not sure I'd be brave enough to replace a Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk handle myself...
Since it doesn't slip in the same way as a Frontier, Trail or Norse Hawk, I wouldn't even know how!!!

I don't know either, but it looks like it fits the same as any hammer, except it uses a hollow circular wedge instead of the traditional type.
