I figured this thread could be a place to create a repository of information about the Hapstone Pro sharpener, which is relatively new to western audiences and hard to find good user advice about.

My first question that maybe some can help me with is this: is there some trick to getting larger stones to fit in the stone holder? One of the big selling points is that you can use just about any stone on the Hapstone because of the universal stone holder, but it seems like Edge Pro stones with the 45 degree bevel are held in place much better than a full size benchstone. I'm kind of worried about putting something like an 8" x 2" Spyderco benchstone in the stone holder and having it fall out straight onto the blade.

Also, the V7 model was just announced, and it seems to be a pretty minor change in that all of the knobs are now made of metal. Has anyone noticed play from the plastic knobs on the V6 Rev. 3 models?

I bought the Hapstone a few months ago. So far I haven't tried any benchstones, but it seems to me it would grip them strongly enough. I also haven't had any issues with any of the knobs.

That's good to know. The plastic knobs feel quite sturdy and their doesn't seem to be much play in any of the joints so it doesn't seem like a major issue.

I don't mind the plastic knobs on my V6 Rev3. That said, the knob that tightens the pivot unit to the vertical rod was problematic for me. I was not able to tighten that knob reliably, it was basically free spinning. I suspect the threads are a little off. Easy fix though — tighten the screw without that little washer:

Another gripe I have is the orange coating that covers some of the metal parts. In points of contact, it came right off after just a couple of knives:

Other than those nitpicks I'm perfectly happy with my Hapstone.

What I'm also happy with is the DXL360S angle cube. About twice as expensive (~$55 from China) as your typical angle cube, but also way more accurate (~0.05 degrees). I was worried it might not fit Hapstone's cube holder as it is a tiny bit larger than many angle cubes, but it does fit just fine.

Might be worth plastidipping all of the contact parts, it's cheap and easy to do at home.
