Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this sharpening system? Looks mechanically similar to the Edge Pro Apex, but made in Ukraine and about half price. Seems like a set of shaptons cut to size up to 30k and the system itself can be had for as low as $327, not minding shipping. I'd like to think I stumbled upon something cool, any input?

There was a hapstone review thread awhile back. If you run a search you may be able to find it.

Yeah, I actually read that a while back. I was hoping someone might have the means to compare it and the edge pro quality wise, to further help me figure out where to throw my money, haha.

As far as I recall the v5 was advertised at the end of that other thread and then never heard of again. Nobody seemed to have any experience with it.

Yeah, I've seen one ukranian dude on instagram who uses it, and that's it. He didn't seem to be getting the most out of it either, so I'm not sure how good it is. I've been getting photogenic mirror edges to this point with the edge pro clone, and he's not getting anything near that, so either that means it isn't a good sharpener (doubtful, another ukranian on YouTube was getting nice results) or the guy isn't doing too great using it.

If you're getting such good results with the clone why not keep using it?

I can't see any reason why the guide itself would cause any differences. I'm sure you'd get different results with different stones. Personally, if I was unhappy with the generic version I'd look at a completely different set up, like the wicked edge or work sharp or something, or try different stones. I wouldn't waste money on a system that works the same way with maybe negligibly better results.

There's a bit of play in the system I'm not too keen on, and parts are cracking. There's a certain degree of perfection I'm missing out on with this thing, haha. I do like the general design, however.

You like the design and the system has worked for you but the quality has failed? I'd highly suggest you buy the real Edge Pro Apex. The pieces won't crack and the screws that clamp the arm pieces to the upright are much better. I speak from experience- I have them both. I don't think you need a Wicked Edge or other system.

Agreed. If he likes the setup then he should pony up the dough and get the real deal.

It seems like the shaptons they sell are also 152mm long, and should fit the edge pro. I may buy those, then the base model apex, judging by what you guys are suggesting.

That should only run me about $40 more than the hapstone ensemble, to be perfectly honest.

I just got my hapstone and I'm using the spyderco bench stones with it along with a course dmt stone. Im probably going to sell my edge pro. Ill let you now if i run into any issues with it, but so far i love it.

I bought the Hapstone a week ago and have sharpened 6 knives already. This is a very well made sharpener, quality parts. I also purchased a clone of the Wicked Edge via Australia. This product was not a very well made item, with vertical knife holder arrangement. The Hapstone can use a variety of stones. I have some triangle stones that worked very well. I also tried the diamond flat stones too. I would highly recommend the product over some of the Apex or apex clones. For the price it was a good value. I also own the Worksharp belt sharpener, but the control of sharpening with the Hapstone appeals more more to my liking.

They are now represented in the US.
