Recommendation? Hapstone R2 Standard versus say....Worksharp Precision Sharp Adjust Elite or KME?

So I realized with all the various types of knives I own, I'm tired of sending them back to the OEM for sharpening and losing use of them for 2-3 weeks at a time. I'd like to purchase a decent sharpener and start maintaining my stuff on my own. My knives are a multitude of blade steels from D2 to ZDP-189 and M390 and I'm not adverse to "buying once and crying once" if it's worth it. I priced out a Hapstone R2 Classic with the Chosera stones and before I pull the trigger, I wanted to get input from the community if it's worth nearly double the price of lower end kits like the KME or even a Wicked Edge Go kit? I'm not a professional and don't plan on earning any money off the setup, but I'd like to be able to sharpen a friends knife if it came up as well. Thanks in advance for any advice that you could lend, it's appreciated!

I just spent a week researching which guided sharpener to buy and I'm going with exactly what you're looking at. Hapstone R2 classic imho is the best when it comes to quality/price. Wanted the Tsprof, but a lil too pricey for me. Cheers, sure someone with real world knowledge will chime in.

I have the Hapstone R2 with a variety of stones. I have a Wicked Edge GO, and recommend the Hapstone over it by far. There are clamping issues with some knives with the WE (FFG knives and really small knives, as examples). You can use a variety of different stones with the R2. I use KME Gold (diamond stones) for a lot of my sharpening. Once broken in, they leave a nice, sharp, somewhat toothy edge that works for everything I do. Chosera stones are not recommended for the newer supersteels. If you buy an R2, you might want to consider the Lite clamps if you have small knives. Those work on pretty big knives, too.

You won't go wrong with a Hapstone R2. Personally, I would go for the R2 Standard rather than the R2 classic. Get a digital angle cube, fine tuning adapter and 2 spring stoppers and you'll have a great system. The R2 Standard with its angled clamps is a very versatile system and will do everything (and more) than the R2 Classic clamps will do. As for stones, Chosera stones are great with most basic steels but can be limiting with some modern high vanadium carbide steels. I would suggest getting diamond bonded stones instead and you'll be able to sharpen any steel. Gritomatic is a great place to get everything you need.

How's this look then for a setup?

That's a great setup, just remember to get 2x spring stoppers and a digital angle cube.
Okay cool. Before I pull the trigger though, what are your thoughts on the upcoming Hapstone RS? I saw the kickstarter for it and I really like that it’s a lot more compact. Do you think it’s worth any negatives that brings with it?

The RS is a nice little system and I'm sure it will yield great results, but it's designed as more of an entry level and smaller system than the R2.

Have any of you guys tried a Sharp Worx? I could see some advantages in a design like that. Using existing stones, ability to manipulate slurry ect.

Okay, I'll stick with the R2 then, thanks!
If you buy the R2 with the accessories 777 Edge recommended, you will not be disappointed. It's a really good system (I have one, so I know). I don't see why people buy the more expensive, similar systems.
