I am aware that the specs for a Hapstone RS say max blade length is 230mm but is this hard and fast or would I be able to sharpen blades up to 250mm on it.
Would rather purchase a RS than a n R2.
Any advise would be appreciated, thanks.

Hapstone RS is a Sharpener.
Moving thread to Maintenance and Tinkering

And have you tried asking the company?

I recall a thread asking this very thing a couple of years ago and a Hapstone rep replied that you could not. I've seen a few other discussions that indicate the RS is limited to the 9" 230mm size blades it's posted for and if you have longer blades you should go with the R2 or V8 for blades up to 300mm/12".

I don't know if 777 Edge 777 Edge may have a solution that will help you, but I'll tag him here just in case he does.

I've sharpened 30 cm + blades on mine and it works just fine, as long as it's a fairly rigid blade. Your only limitation is that you won't be able to flip the knife 180 degrees without lifting the sharpener / having it hang over the edge of a table.

Have a look at this post I made in a thread about the Hapstone RS:

I am considering getting a Hapstone sharpener for home use (kitchen knives) where the longest knives are ~10". Can an RS be used for longer knives by doing half at a time? Do one half then reposition the blade and do the other end.
Secon question is how much to spend on stones? Do CBN stoned need to be dressed?

A 10" blade works just fine on the Hapstone RS, just rotate it in one direction only so the handle won't impede rotation - or simply lift the whole unit (if needed for a long blade) to rotate when sharpening.

Definitely don't do in sections, that will mess with your sharpening angle. Do the whole blade in one clamping, don't remove and re-clamp it.

I think the limiting factor is rotating the blade to sharpen both sides without unclamping the knife. I think around 9" is the length I've seen mentioned by users here. I think you can get around that by mounting the system near the edge of your table so the longer blades will clear to be flipped. I've read the type of clamp can make a difference as well.

With the original clamps rotated outward, the space between the outside of the clamps is 170mm (6.7 inches). I have a 12 inch ruler clamped in it (below in the photos). It will easily be able to sharpen a blade of that length. I would even say up to 13 inches of blade would be fine. At a reach of 6.5 inches from the center (13 inch blade), it still has about 2 inches of rod to spare inside the stone holder tube.

The only limitation with a 12-13 inch blade, would be that you can't rotate the clamp 180 degrees without lifting the sharpener off the table or raising the front while rotating. If you want full rotation without lifting it, then the max would be about a 7 inch blade.

Space between the clamps:

A 12 inch ruler clamped and the stone holder tube removed off of the rod - here you can see how much rod reaches beyond the far end:

A view from above of (what would be) about a 13 inch blade. Full reach of sharpening is comfortably possible.

CBN stones will require dressing like any sharpening stone, but for most people it wouldn't be frequently. If you sharpen lots of knives then of course they would start to glaze and need it more often.

I see 777 Edge 777 Edge replied before I taggedhim in ... 👍

Yes, precisely as JJ_Colt45 JJ_Colt45 said.

Worst-case scenario even if you have a very cumbersome, long or weirdly shaped knife that restricts rotation during sharpening, you can simply loosen the 2 screws holding the entire rotating unit mechanism, then rotate it and slip the whole unit back into its mount. Definitely better than unclamping and re-clamping the blade for every rotation.

Thanks all for the info. A related question would be for home use can the cost difference between the RS and R2 justified?
