I have a buddy wanting to sell his 1x30 which he only used maybe once, for $15. I was thinking about modifying it to accept a larger motor. I have a spare 3/4 Hp motor that runs at 1700 rpm and has a 1/2 shaft on it. I was wondering the shaft size on the original motor for the sander itself so I can put the new motor on it. Thanks in advance!

I have had first hand experience with this model. I fear it would not stand up to that size motor that you are considering. I think it is all out with the motor it has. JMHO

I used it for some grinding, and the stock motor kinda sucks. It's almost like it loses its torque after a while. I have no idea if you could fit that motor on it, but for $15 bucks, I'd buy it.

I'd skip any serious modifications on the HF. Use it as is. As noted it is very light duty and, I also believe, would be way over powered with the 3/4 horse. If your motor is TEFC, then look at picking up a better, more suitable grinder down the road.

I would mic the shaft on the HF grinder motor first, I'm willing to bet its metric and you will need to do some extra work on the pulley

You would do better to save up some more $$ and build yourself a 2 x 72" grinder. The money you would have spent on belts for the 1 x 30" will help pay for the 2 x 72". Here is a link to free plans, I built one and use it every weekend! http://www.shankcustomknives.com/how-to-make-a-belt-grinder.html

Just have fun!

Could you give us a actual cost of such daunting task at today's market value? Please include the tools and materials the op may or not have. Thanks.
