I notice the metal vertical/horizontal bandsaw from Harbor Freight is on sale for $139, and even though I'm still working on my first batch of knives, it seems like a good deal I might just go for. Can it possibly be used on wood with different blades at its highest speed?

I use mine to cut wood and other handle materials, but i don't change the blade or speeds. it's just a tad slow, but it does the job.

That's good news.
Hacksawing my big (1"x6"x19") piece of brass for bolsters and guards has been an good incentive for getting a bandsaw

, and if the saw could cut wood, so much the better. I have a bunch of 85 year old hard maple cylindrical rollers about 2" thick by 20" long that should make pretty good handle material, and the saw would be a big help in cutting them up.
Thanks for the input.

The wood pictured in the post above was cut last night on a Grizzly saw (which is the exact same model that you are looking at from Harbor Freight).

It is slow going but for the small pieces we tend to work on for knifemaking, it is OK.

Just bite the bullet and make sure that you get the more expensive bi-metal blades for cutting out steel. You will save in the long run.

I also mounted a piece of plywood on the "table". This sure has made life easier.
