I just ordered some belts from Lee Valley for my HF 1x30, and they seem to be about a half inch to one inch too long. However my SuperGrit belts seem to be just right. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas on how to get these to work on my grinder?
Has anyone modified their HF grinder to run a larger wheel?

My first power tool for knifemaking was a 1" x 30" from Lowe's. I still have it and find a use for it every once in a while. I ordered my belts from Trugrit and never had a problem like you describe. I'd think the 1" x 30" would be underpowered for a larger wheel.

do the smaller grinders work good?

I've had a 1x30 Harbor Freight unit for some years. When I bought my wife hers I had to take the first one back and get her one at the store. I'd suggest buying one at the store and inspecting it before leaving personally. I do that with anything I buy now from HF. Too many times I've mail ordered something from them to save money and ended up having to drive 100 miles round trip just to return it and get a good one. Things to inspect on the 1x30 are the mount screws for the motor, the knobs and that it has all the little feet on the bottom of the unit. I'm sure there is more to look for as well as those things I've found in the ones I've owned.

By the way, I get my belts for this from A&H Abrasives and they are ceramic belts, none of which have ever given me any issues whatsoever for fit or life and unlike some others I've bought these are bi-directional belts so when they wear down from use I can usually squeeze a bit more life out of them by turning them around to run the other way for a bit.

I got belts for mine from Lee Valley and they all fit fine. If they are mis-sized, I guess I'd be calling to complain.

i have a HF 1x30 and have noticed that with certain belts. But mine were mainly supergrit belts that were too large. I just put some electrical tape layered on the top wheel and the adjustment until the belt fit just right. then when i bought belts that fit better i took the tape off.

Check the tension spring, I had to take mine apart to unjam the spring so I got full travel, the centering adjustment worked better after that as well.

just wondering... I actually picked up a HF 1x30" today and was looking for some ultra-fine belts to get. Is 400 about the finest grit you can get for the 1x30"?
