hard beating on a horseman

Hi guys,

Just bought my third emerson, this is my only second hand. It's from 2008 #0108. It was in a good condition when it came in, just a normal used knife with some good scratches on the black coating, relatively sharp, no play up/down and no play sidewasy, but I noticed the second ball detent wasn't functioning correctly, actually pushed back into the right (non locking) liner.

So I took it apart, cleaned of some light rust, lubed it up, slightly bent back the second detent exactly to the spot where it is on my cqc-8 (love-it!!!), put it back together, sharpened it and after seeing that the detent was now really functioning well decided is was time to punish it just to see what it could take.

So I went to my little shed of horrors :), gave the knife a spanking on a lot of cardboard boxes and then I did loads of stabbing and cutting thick wood blocks, killed my thick plastic paper recycle container and punctured the hell out of my big workbench wooden poles . Tried to kill a knot in the wood by slashing into it. Yeah, it rocked!!! (<insert your visual picture of girlfriend's face, coming in to see who just got killed ;)>)

Now, since I was just testing to see if it held up to this kind of violence, I'm not sure if what comes next is fair to emerson :)

Let me first say, that I was really pleased with the amount of beating it took and it really gave me a feeling of what it (and it's bigger brother and the commander) could take :D

The point of the blade held up perfectly after loads of stabbing and prying. The blade was very dull after I was done, but that might be because of the sharpening skills of the previous owner :jerkit:.

What was not really nice to see was that the liner lock was now actually on the side of the other liner (where it was probably halfway(50%) to 60% before. There is up and down play, not really much, but very noticable. And also, on the second ball detent, the ball is now gone. Yes, there is a hole where the ball used to be...

What worries me is the liner lock. Now, I used two pair of working gloves when doing the intense stabbing session and felt very comfortable working without gloves afterwards, until I saw how the liner lock looked and noticed the play. Now, I really do not feel very secure about it.

Also, the lockup of the blade in closed position is now -gone-

Did I punish the horseman too much? Should I send it in because the ball should still be there? Or is it my own fault?

Since it was second hand I deliberately used it to get a feel for it's capabilities, so if you all say "hey dude, that's what you get when spanking your nr. 1 hard use knife in the world", then that's perfectly acceptable for me. In that case, just say what I can do to fix it :)

Also I would just like to get your opinion on it and what I might do to fix the liner lock. Why did it go all the way right anyway?

thanks in advance,

greetings from Holland!!

dude, send that mofo in. emerson must fix it. it should be able to stand some good old use!

Hehe, clear. Btw, I wasn't totally fair to the previous owner, since I sharpened it right after it came in :D lol.

Man, I'm more brutal to my to my knives. I've done basically everything you've mentioned plus stabbed them into sheet metal. My bm710, cqc8, and the commander I had, and they have all held up fine. If they didn't, I would have ditched them. I carry my framelock horseman most of the time now and have done everything with it beside sticking metal. After doing it with two others emersons I'm sure it capable as well.

Anyways, the point is I'm pretty harsh on my main carry knives as well and they are fine. I think the condition of your knife is unsat. Especially from a company that claims "the #1 Hard Use Knives in the World"

Send it in. I believe in EKI and believe Ernest will take care of you

...but I noticed the second ball detent wasn't functioning correctly, actually pushed back into the right (non locking) liner...

That would have made me a bit suspicious right there, but you really have no way to know what was done to the knife before you got it. I would send a note to EKI and see what they can do for you. I have no doubt that you will be pleased with the outcome.

My Horseman had some blade play, I sent it to Emerson and they fixed it right away, got it back good as new! :) I would send it to them so they can take a look.

I disassembled it and assembled it again and the liner lock actually does not travel all the way to the right, but it just touches the right detent.

I'm feeling somewhat reassured that it won't come out, but will contact emerson about the ball detent and the small amount of up/down bladeplay and see if I can send it in. It will also depend on the postage costs from and to the US.

I'll keep you posted, thanks for your respones
