Hard leather grips gripe

Hello, all.

Just got a Kabar USMC Short version. The size and configuration and such are just what I was looking for.

Problem is, the hard, varnished leather grip. Maybe I should have gone for the kraton grip version, but I like style of the old-school type. Any suggestions on creating a better grip? Sand off the varnish and treat with neat's foot oil?

Thanks,

Rossab

Best way to tell how good those leather grips are is to look at how many old Ka-Bar's still have the original leather on the handle
If it didnt work , they wouldnt use it.
When my 'Bar' was new I thought the handle would be slippery too , after some good use I am glad I didnt mess with it.

Leave it alone....
My KaBar still has the original leather handle on it. I carried that blade for 2 full combat tours in Nam about 40yrs ago.

There pretty good grips the way they are, But I like to flatten the sides on a belt sander just a bit. Then I use a triangle file and file checks in the side. Reseal the handle with oil and wax, or varnish, or even shoe polish.
