Just got the lansky delux and used it first to practice sharpen a S&W Taylor POS at 25 degrees and got it shaving sharp. Then I tried it on my EDC SOG X-Ray Vision and cant get it shaving sharp using the 25 degree slot. I first reprofiled it with the course and then used the medium and ground off the wire edge all at 25 degrees. Then I used the fine and extra fine stone to polish but it wont shave even though it seems very sharp. What am I doing wrong? Is it the wrong angle?

Hi K Man.

If you're gonna reprofile ats 34 or better steel with a Lansky, get the extra coarse diamond stones. It'll reprofile real quick. Then fininsh with the rest of the deluxe kit.

I have sharpened several ATS34 knives withe the Lansky Deluxe Diamond set and have had no problem getting them to shave.I used the 20 deg. instead of the 25 and finished with a strop.

You may need to spend more time with the medium stone before you move to the fine stone, and it does seem to take quite a while to get the ATS-34 polished up with the Lansky's fine diamond stone. I personally prefer the regular kit, the normal fine stone puts on a finer edge, but it takes me about 10 minutes of polishing to get it there.

I use the Lansky Diamond system. After the fine diamond stone I use a regular ulta fine, if I want a polished edge.

Best to use the Lansky for profiling the edge and then the sharpmaker or crock sticks to maintain the edge. The best of both worlds.

Noted something though, after the fine stone, the knife shaves easily. Wipe it with tough cloth and it does not shave as well. The lube from the tough cloth allows the hair to slide off the edge. This does not affect the performance of the blade in actual use.

No, don't ask how many times I went back to the stones trying to get the edge back after using tough cloth before I figured it out.

I don't know why you are having so much trouble sharpening ats-34. I get lots of ats-34 knives screaming sharp with the regular lansky set. If I need to reprofile I only use the coarse and medium stones. Since the fine is just for polising the edge, I instead use a leather hone loaded with a polishing compound. This polishes it up nicely and leaves a sharper than factory edge.

After this procedure, when the knife doesn't shave anymore I use a steel. It usually brings the edge back unless I have been doing some SUPER HEAVY DUTY CUTTING. After you work your way through the lansky stones - STROP! It will make a world of difference. Many times I have sharpened a knife on the lansky and it didn't shave until I stropped it!
