Any suggestions for a hard use folder for $60 or under? The reason I'm asking is because my friend has a Kershaw Funxion. He is a volunteer firefighter and that knife is taking a beating. He's looking in for a heavier duty folder at or under $60.

Cold steel voyager large or medium can both be had at around 45$. The tri ad lock is extremely tough.

I would agree that Cold Steel is the way to go for under $60. If he doesn't mind upping his budget a bit, I would suggest the Spyderco Assist. It's pricier but, for my money, it's one of the best rescue folders out there.

I agree with the Cold Steel. For $25 more he could get a ZT0200 blem from Kershawguy. THAT thing will take a beating.

Here is a vid I did of a sub $60 Cold Steel that should fit the bill...

Kershaw Knockout is right around the $60 mark. The spyderco Tenacious/persistence are around $45 and are very tough knives and have great build quality.

I've been wanting to try a Cold Steel Code 4 for awhile now. I imagine it would take a beating and it's in your price range.

Cold steel voyager series, Ontario rat 1, spyderco "virtue" series (resilience, tenacious, ambitious)

What you want is a fixed blade.

Most of the time I would agree, but if the guy is doing the volunteer firefighter thing a fixed blade may be a bad idea due to workplace politics/social reasons. No one will blink at a firefighter carrying a folder, even a large one, but you may catch hell for carrying a fixed blade. I know it varies from department to department, but the folder is a sure bet.

They are very well made. Just be aware that cold steel measures edge length for their blade length, not guard to tip.

I second the Kershaw Knockout!

A Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock knife IS a fixed blade. As in the blade will snap long before the lock gives out. Check out cutlerylover's video "I broke a cold steel knife".

Nah, ain't buying the hype. Only a fixed blade is a fixed blade.

A quality steel full tang fixed blade will beat the cold steel folders 10 out of 10 times. What I mean is that in case of a Voyager/Recon 1/Talwar etc etc... it doesn't really matter that much if they were fixed. The lock up is so ridiculous the dimensions of the blade mean it will give out under pressure long before it's lock will.

These folders aren't indestructible by any means but the fact that they fold isn't a weakness. If they came in a high quality carbon steel things would be different.

The Kershaw KO and CS Code4 are good knives but for this application as a heavy user I think their handles are less than ideal. It'll work but I'd go with a Recon or Voyager myself.
