Hard use knife. A little help.

I am sure this has been over and over, but I have something specific I am looking for, and I thought I could use some help. I already have quite a few knives that I would consider good quality. For a long time Benchmade and Spyderco are all I have purchased. Recently I have decided to step it up a notch. I work as a career firefighter and I am looking for something that will get quite a bit of use. I need something with a strong blade, that will hold a good edge. I would really like a 3.5" folder and I would like to keep it around $400 if possible.

Just wanted to see what you all have had good luck with in that range.

look at the strider SnG. it is right at $400 and has a 3.5" blade. and if you break it they replace it.
 
Where is the best place to find information on their blades? I may be blind, but their site does not seem to show too much about the knives.

Blueline gear is one place and USN, they have a Strider Forum over there.
 
Contact Rick Hinderer. You're a firefigther, so he might be able to sell you one of his XM-18s directly.
 
if you are a firefighter then you an get an XM-18 from Rick Hinderer for $375. Better made and feels more robust IMO than the Strider. You'd be hard pressed to find a better folding knife for "hard use" than an XM-18.

It's a knife designed by a firefighter too :)
 
I shot an e-mail to the guys at Hinderer the other day and I am still waiting to hear back. That is in the running for sure. I think the XM-18 is one of the best looking knives out there, but that is my opinion.

Glad to see it in the running. Also, just wanted to see what other ones you all came up with. There are so many people making knives, I do not know where to start.

Adam,

If you like the looks of the XM-18 then IMO it's game over, just get that. You are not going to find anything better for the need you have expressed, and in fact it may be the best knife on the market for what you want.

Now you need to decide what color scale you want, not what knife you want :)

I would go with orange scale and stonewashed blade/frame...

You can find them at www.xtremeknives.com they all go for around $300-$400.

I carry the RAO on duty in my pursuit box as well as an Emerson CQC 7 on me, but all the Emerson’s are extremely strong in various blade lengths and styles and are in the $250-$300 range except or the Ti-frame lock versions that run a little higher.

The Striders are great also but a little over priced, I have a SMF and GB and have owned an AR. Be carful with the claims of you break it they replace it.

There are many others including Benchmade 755 MPR (sub 3 in blade), and the Chris Reeve Sebenza and Umnumzaan all great knives it just depends on your tastes and budget. Good Luck and happy shopping!!
 
I have a Firetac extreme which is a little bigger than what you want, but there is regular firetac also. Rick is an awesome guy and makes an unbelievable knife. When the blade on my extreme got damaged even though he was swamped with orders he had me send it in and fixed it. You could never tell that anything had happened to it and it was back in my hands in a weeks time.

If you can't get a Hinderer than +1 on a strider. I have a pt/cc and I love it, I don't even notice it in my back pocket until I need it (no clip)

I agree. Get the XM18. :thumbup:
 
I'm surprised no one has said ZT knives yet. The 0500 MUDD is a beast and the pivot and lock are sealed so if you drop it grit and sand won't get in the moving parts. It is a great knife but recently discontinued but can still be found. I should pick up another myself.

The Gayle Bradley is nice but I'm not sure I would call it heavy. The liner lock and 65 HRC blade I don't think I would beat on too hard. The Manix 2 with ball bearing lock and hollow ground blade would be a better hard use knife.

I too love the look of the orange scale on stonewashed. I was thinking orange because it will be easier to see if I drop in where I might be using it.

Thanks for all the other suggestions so far. A little more searching but I am pretty sure what I want.
