What are some of the best hard use knives with blades of 6 inches and longer. The knives must be available and easy to replace if lost or stolen. The Kabars are about the best I have at this time.

If you mean the US Navy Mk2 or generic USMC k-bar; then try the Case USMC, Ontario's Marine Combat.
In fact the Freedom Fighter series couldn't be better; if you're into this classic range of US military blade patterns.

If you want easy to replace, then you don't want a Busse family knife, I assume. :D In that case, I would recommend Ranger Knives, Ready Detachment or RD series, starting with the RD6. 5160 spring steel, 0.25" thick, full flat ground, very tough stuff. Not the most pretty knives around, and not scalpels, but if you want a knife that you can really pound on and don't want to pay top dollar for it, Ranger Knives is what you want. As a plus, you get to deal with Justin, the owner of Ranger Knives, who is easily one of the most pleasant guys in the business that I've ever dealt with.

Fixed or folding?

There is no such thing as a folding "hard use" knife. Sure, one may advertise a folder as tough, one may call it a hard use knife, and slap a 1/2" thick spine on it, but it will still be a folder, and inherently prone to failure and weakness. Anyone thinking that a folder will actually consistently stand up to really hard use (in the sense that might be called abusive) is kidding themselves.

Ranger for sure. If you are looking for a cheap easily replaceable knife that will stand up to anything.

"The knives must be available and easy to replace if lost or stolen."
A Ranger Knife qualifying statement if ever there was one.

Cold Steel Bushman

I beat mine up from day one and it has never failed me. It is easy to sharpen and has a very usable design. Best of all it is so cheap that if it did break or I did lose it I could buy another from my change bowl.

I have Busses, and they are very fine hard use knives, but they are usually quite expensive and hard to get. I'll join in with the others who have recommended Ranger knives. The RD series is very tough. They are made of 5160 steel with micarta handles. Here are a few:

If this is going to be a knife porn thread, here is my RD9 at work. I think she looks like business. She certainly chops and batons like business! :D

Elen: Busse Knives do not fail! there owners sometimes fail them, only way to lose a busse is to lose it, sell it or trade it! HOGPOWER! And if you are a Overly Abusive individual Jerry will replace it! Money well Spent!

While I own some Busses, and very much enjoy them, their availability is still hardly "easy to replace" level. Sure, the warranty is great, and the knives themselves are as near unbreakable as I know, but you can still lose one or have one stolen, and in these cases, good luck trying to find a replacement quickly. And Busses are pretty steep in terms of price, compared to Rangers. But, if availability and price are not an issue, then certainly go with a Busse. INFI is great, and you won't find that elsewhere.

udtjim, If you work around water I'd suggest you the Gerber LMF II. It's built for military in mind. I also suggest Ranger Knives. Either the RD or Afghan series would fit you well I'm sure. You can count on Justin's knives.
