I'm interested in a talonite knife. I thought it would be a great blade for in and around salt water because of the corrosion resistance.

does anyone have experience w/using talonite in a hard-use environment? I've heard mentioned that talonite blades won't hold an edge as well as other martenistic steels.

thoughts?

In my experience, Talonite holds an edge better than most oother steels. It is also relatively easy to sharpen.

IF you hit something hard....ice, bone, hardwood, rock....you will roll the edge, and have a nightmarish time bringing it back.

since its lower rockwellhardness is not comparable to the modern steels on the market, stellite is not as tough on the edge, however, its vanadium carbide molecules give it great wear, so it will cut a long time, but as steve pointed out, it can dent easier

Having the maker leave it thicker near the edge will greatly improve this problem, especially if you flat grind it........any problem this presents can be worked around, and the corrosionless properties along with great edge wear more than offset this one weakness.

Personally, I like Stellite and Talonite a lot, they are my favorite blade materials for EDC use.

I will definitely agree that putting a thick edge on the blade is the way to go if you want hard use out of the material.

Here's a knife from guy known to use Stellite. This is a big SOB, made for a friend of his. You might of heard of the maker, Kit Carson. This knife was used and carried, Kit refinished it and I was able to buy it from his friend.

1/4" Stellite, 8" blade.
