What would be considered hard use for a folder? I suppose hard use for a fixed blade would be chopping. The reason I ask is because I have a 710 plain edge coming back to me from BM and I want to beat up on it a bit. I don't want to abuse it, however. You see, my daily routine doesn't call for any real vigorous cutting so I'm gonna have to seek some out. I find that I appreciate my knives much more after I put 'em through the paces. I plan to reprofile the edge first thing.

Cutting extra sharp cheddar cheese straight out of the fridge. The bigger the block the better. I really like the cracker barrel stuff. I have had several fixed blades that were not full tange give up or deform under this type of pressure. One long hard push cut.

It is not the fall that kills you. It is the realization that "yes, you did something that stupid."

If you are into cheddar you need to try Cabot "Private Stock" or "Hunter Sharp".

Not only will it give the knife a workout but you have good cheese when you are done.

The "Hunter Sharp is so far beyond "Extra Sharp" it pretty much redefines the term. I recomend the 3 Lb. block.

Maybe we need a "Cut the Cheese" forum...

A "hard use" folder in the 3.5"-4" size range should be able to hack through a 2x4 in less than 20 minutes. The pivot screw may need to be tightened a fraction of a turn when you're done, but there should be no damage to the knife. I don't normally use a knife to cut 2x4's, but I can imagine a scenario wherein I might want to cut a piece of wood that size. Seems reasonable.

Stop when you get to bone.

I usually cut through some copper com cables to test the durability of my edges. Cutting up aluminum beverage cans is pretty abusive to the edge. Chopping hardwood will let you know how tough the edge is, though there is no way I would chop through a 2X4 with a knife that small.

I also like to whittle on hard plastic, not chop, whittle.

The Cabot is very good and easy to get around here. Not familiar with the others. Where can I get them??

AF... Get yourself a bunch of box's, and go to town. The best part of having a user, is sharpening it, and The is no better satisfaction than to put a beautiful edge back on to a dull blade.
