Did I spell PATINA wrong? Oops...

Anyway, I've been using my BRKT golok a lot lately. I've been using it for yard work, bushwhacking, clearing thorn scrub, and as a general trail chopped/short machete at work. I noticed today how the patina has developed and decided to take some pics when I got home. There is spots from fruit juice from chopping up oranges and mangos at lunch time and a nice gray with dark scuffs from never cleaning it.

I sometimes produce a really nice patina by applying mustard to carbon steel.

It would be a pleasant surprise if one of these days, combining steel and mustard produced a beautiful Latina instead. :D

That's a nice looking golok, by the way!

All the best,

- Mike

Nice looking, are they hollow ground? Kind of pricey aren't they. Did the sheath come from another maker?

They are full convex ground and stay hair shaving sharp with stropping alone even through the work load I put it through.
Pricey? they are anywhere from $180-$220 depending on the handle but that price includes the sheath which is $75 if bought separately. I have a lot of goloks, including two barkies. They are expensive but they are well worth it (IMHO) if you want the sharpest and fastest and best balanced golok without modding or re-profiling. Do I think the Barkie golok is the best bang for the buck golok out there? No way, but they are covered for life with an unconditional warranty and you must factor that into the cost. Not to mention the amount of work that goes into making each one compared to the stamped and rolled goloks like Martindale, or the forged valients that may or may not have a good heat treat. I have a couple valients and the heat treat is pretty hit or miss.

Is that Brazilian Rosewood? That is a great looking tool. Mine just showed up today. Natural Canvas Micarta. I may change out the handles down the road, but for now it looks good enough. The amount of bite this Golok gets in wood is amazing.

My other bark river golok is natural canvas micarta. I actually like the rounded profile of the micarta handle for comfort but I like the looks of the wood slabs. That is brazilian rosewood by the way. I bought the micarta golok and a week later got the rosewood golok in a trade. They have both served me very well.

What knife is that Big Mike? Got a full pic of it?

Those Goloks look 'complete'!!!!!!!!!

It is one of the 2008 Custom Bowie’s made by Mike Stewart’s Crew at Bark River.

Made for Derrick at Knives Ship Free, they are known as KSF Custom Bowie’s.

My knife was a special version they made for me, it is the only one with a single quillian guard, it features a oversized IPE handle and Birds Beak style pinky hook (the rest of the run had double quillian guards and either coffin or saber style handles).

Bark River always seem to have some special Bowie projects in the works, and have already released several small runs of Bowie’s in 2009.
