HARDBALL's first Becker.....a BK-14

Hi all,

Well....technically....it's my second Becker BK 14. My funds got really tight last Summer and I sold my NIB Becker BK14.
So, I just acquired another NIB BK 14 which I plan on keeping! I'd like to strip off the Black coating (is Jassco good ?) as I'm not a fan of the Black coating/finish. Question....should I strip off the coating on the blade ONLY and not strip the "Logo's" area ? Please advise. Also, at some point in the future, I would really like this knife to sport some custom handles. If I can find a proper BK 14 handle template, I'm thinking I may have some Custom made Maine Moose Antler handles for the BK 14 (if funds allow). Otherwise.....I suspect I'll just have to buy those common plastic Orange and Black handles. Thanks for any help/advice/suggestions.

Congrats on the new 14! I edc'd mine for months before getting a 24.
Jassco works great but as far as leaving the logo as is, that's totally up to you. I usually leave the handles coated so I don't have to worry about rust under the scales but that's just me.
There are some guys that can make a set of scales for you if you want. I think 710 and Dexwithers would be a good place to start.

First of all welcome. Jasco works fine, I have a gallon myself. Your laser etch won't go anywhere, unless you start grinding the steel. Though some use PCB acid etchant on their logos before stripping the blade. I chose not to do it. But it does give the logo a nice stamped look. Now When your ready to strip (ohlala) take some sandpaper or old knife and scrap the coating smooth & thin. You don't have too. But it really helps cut the time it takes to strip. bonus is there is less clean up too. HAVE FUN and keep us posted w/ pics.

GRATS on the new blade and nice choice. Jas will work great and if u keep your blade maintained well, go ahead n strip it all. If u plan on doing the custom handles and not removing them from time to time to clean, leave the handles coated.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome and the well wishes on my new BK14. Also thank for the excellent info on "stripping" the coating. I kind of like the idea of leaving the handles coated for extra protection. After all, I am living in Maine. I'm glad to hear the "Logo's" won't disappear with the use of Jas. Once I find the time to do this project, I'll have to also concentrate on finding handles. No cord wrap for me. I met a guy/artist a couple of years ago who carves Moose Antler and I suspect he could make some really unique Maine Moose Antler scales but.....arrrrr....no doubt it would not be cheap. Ooh well.....I can dream. In the mean time....I will check out 710 and Dexwithers. Thanks for that info RKM.

Hardball as in a 230 grain fmj or as in an MSR?I had good results using kleenstrip citrus to remove both the old and new coatings, and to paraphrase Gunny Highway " it's ecologically sound".

Hi Willis,

Yes indeed. HARDBALL as in 230 grain FMJ. Thanks Willis for the info you provided. Now....all I have to do is find the TIME to do this (and about ten other backed up projects).

Hi tfields,

Thanks for the well wishes on my new BK 14. I think once I have it "decked out" the way I want it.....it's going to be my (mostly) WOODS (EDC) back up here in Maine.
