Every year me and the wife take the kids to the beaches several times to make memories and do cool family stuff. I of course carry knives everywhere and made this before going out last weekend. We normally climb rocks and crawl down to shore lines to look for shells with the kids. I have lost several knives at the beach or on the water in my years and was not looking to make another one of those memories. I was curious if any of you guys or gals use these type lanyards and if you would like to share. I will usually carry a Vic of some sort during these outings for its superb rust resistance and easy replacability. Pictured is a Victorinox Super Tinker(one of my favs)

I can't remember the last time I saw water too deep to see the bottom. Not much use for a lanyard here, but that is a very nice looking rig you have there.

I use a lanyard on all my SAK's. From spring until late fall, we do boating of some sort, canoe, some sailing. I had one knife go over to Davy Jones locker, and I'm not loosing another one. If I'm going out on the water, I'll be carrying a knife on a lanyard.

Carl.

If I'm on any kind of longer-term hiking or backpacking trip you can be sure that there's a SAK in my pocket with a long lanyard like yours securely fixed to my belt. Just the way I've always done it, regardless of whatever other knife is around.

I'm hard core for lanyards. I have one on basically every knife possible. :)

Also nice to see you here. I watch you youtube videos. I'm qualityknives on there.

I don't have any traditionals with lanyard holes (i do have fob knives but they go on a chain) but I do have a KSF knife slip which I have put a lanyard on to affix to my belt so its almost impossible to lose.

Robert, any chance we could see that setup? I have a knife I want to do the same thing with.

Totally off topic, but your comment reminded me of the lake we were on this past holiday weekend. It was deep green in color, like the water in a deep rock quarry. Several of us tried to find the bottom of the lake diving straight down off the dock, and not a single one of us could. I went down deep enough that the pressure change was uncomfortable in my ears.

I told them the story of the heavy magnet attached to a 30 foot rope we carried in our toolbox when I built docks and boat slips on the lakes of South Carolina. That setup retrieved many tools from the bottom of lakes, tools that had been dropped as we worked. Sadly, I never did find the brand new 16 oz. hammer that slipped out of my hand the very first day I used it.

My elephant ivory GEC conductor has a small chinese button knot lanyard attached to the bail so I can drag it out of my pocket easy.

I usually don´t take lanyards on my knives. But on some knives, it seems to be the best. On my SAKs I like lanyards and on my #73 I´ve added a leather lanyard. It´s nice to pull them out of the pocket very easily.

It´s a little strange, but I just put lanyards on knives, I use to carry in my backpocket. Front pocket carry knives don´t have any lanyards...

I have always loved lanyards, but I have never found a set up (clipped to the belt) that comfortably works for me 100%. I made one with a carabiner and a sort of clap with a thumb lever (no idea what to call it) that attached to the knife. The problem was that the lanyard would swing from my hip unless I clipped it to my pants or stuck it in my pocket when I was using the knife. It wasn't that it didn't work, it just got annoying.

I do the same thing Humppa, a simple lanyard for back pocket is all I do anymore. No more clips on the belt for me...at least until I find a comfortable solution.

Yeah. I use them. Normally when I am in the woods with a pocket knife like a SAK, I put a cord lanyard long enough to either go around my neck or as long to my hand outstretched to belt. I never lost a knife after that. Those that want to borrow yours only go that far as well. I make a wrist lanyard with 3 knots close to the blade then one at the end with enough length for my hand to fit through with gloves, and then you just twist the lanyard a couple times and you don't lose it. I put something like that on a machete or large chopper for retention in my hand.

I use two types of lanyards, depending on the knife. For my EDC SAKs (Vic Huntsman, Farmer, or Safari) I have a paracord lanyard that ends in a monkeyfist ball knot that slips under my belt, suspending the knife inside my front right or back right pocket - it really makes it feel weightless and the knife doesn't get lost down in the bottom of the pocket with change and other stuff - just a quick tug and it's free.
The second kind of lanyard I use is a looped leather strip with its ends running through a bead, used on all my small fixed EDC blades - the idea is to slip your little finger throught the loop when drawing the knife from its sheath, tightening the bead snug as necessary - that way you can instantly empty your hand to grab something or climb without dropping the knife, then, with a flip of the wrist, the knife's handle is back in your palm again.
Best Wishes,
"Bloody Bill"

I just have square knot lanyards on my SAKs and scout knives, or any knives with a bail. I like that idea for my Vic farmer.

Not to be too critical, but that isn't a lanyard, it's a fob. A lanyard is a length of line used to secure an object to another object, such as tying off a wrench to a stanchion or securing a knife to your belt. A fob is a short length of line used to extend grip area or facilitate retrevial from a pocket. I know people use the terms interchangably all the time, but they really aren't even close to the same thing.

I use a chain on my Victorinox Huntsman. The main purpose is that I can cut something, let the knife hang down by the chain while I use both hands for a task, then I can just hook my hand down and grab the knife again. I've had various lanyards and fobs on the orange Aitor, but I usually carry it without a lanyard or fob these days.

I put a lanyard on anything that will be on my person or in the boat (kayak) near/in the water, but they only stay on as long as I'm in the water. I HATE lanyards on my knives. I'm OK with fobs but lanyards always seem to get in my way.
Last time I went near the water I just "jump-proofed" my knife in it's sheath with some cord so that it would'nt get lost if I flipped but I could still have fairly easy access to it.
Anything in my pockets (knives) get lanyarded to my person, anything on the boat (water bottles, dry bag) gets lanyarded to the boat.
