If this has been answered before, I am sorry for asking again.

I read somewhere that you can heat a hardened steel such as an old file, saw blade to glowing red and until a magnet will not stick to it to anneal the metal.

I also read that you can do this to heat treat. I think that might be misinformation. Has anyone heard of this and is it true. Let's say the metal is w-2 or 1095 something of that nature.
 
Briefly: Steel is annealed by heating and cooling slowly. Steel is hardened by heating and cooling very quickly.

High carbon steels such as W2 and 1095 require more care in both of these operations.
