IMHO, this is the hardest part about knifemaking....the toughest decision...the most emotionally difficult task...

throwing away old belts!
 :( :grumpy:

Take a look at this pile (last week was a clean-up week....finally got around to getting rid of the old worn-out belts).

You are looking at around $300 worth of abrasives....Gone.....

.....Gone!

At $5 a pop (average) I try to get as much out of a belt as I can...but eventually they reach a point where they become unusable.

These belts last ten times longer than the cheapo belts...so it's worth it to buy the good ones.

Still...it is SO hard to throw them away.

Hopefully I can fit it all in one bag....:(

[edited to add]

Just finished stuffing 'em into a bag....worse than I thought...

87 belts....so, at least $400....:( :( :(

My wallet needs a shoulder to cry on...

Funny about that. I am a much smaller shop than you and I have a bunch of worn belts around I just can't seem to part with. I keep thinking they will come in handy. But they never do. I think they breed at night and more worn belts appear.

heh, I have exactly same problem

and of course pushing a worn belt too far actually makes for more work, and can make you more likely to make a mistake. but I still do it.

I don't recall who it was but Blade mentioned one maker that throws his old belts on the floor around his grinder.
Saves a knife from bouncing all around when you happen to lose one off the grinder.  :D

I am still using the belts you donated at the MWKK Dan...

Yeah...broke!

That is not a plain old belt sander Astro. That is a 2" x 72" KMG grinder. Its the cream of the crop (~$2K). The front roller/platten section can be changed to several configurations in seconds. Kricket has one of them and like four of the attachments too. It spoils you in a matter of seconds. Its way off in my future though. I'm using a 1x42 by delta that cost me 40 dollars. Of course, Dan's work warrants it, and mine fits the bill too. Just some useless 411 on that beauty of a tool.

Yeah, considering how many blades Dan'd sharpenned with those belts :)

One day I'd get an one incher........when I move outta this jungle.........

made knives on my third floor apartment balcony for a while....

;)

Turn 'em inside out
