I hate to say this but good hardness testers cost $$$$!
There is a new kind available now that drops a hardened ball on the material and measures the bounce inside of a plastic tube. Somehow this gives a Rc reading that the manufacturer claims is accurate within two points. The only probelem with this is they only claim it is accurate on materials thicker that 1/4".
We have portable hand held units at work. They work good and are accurate but they cost around 2K! Having them serviced is also expensive.
I have always had access to Rockwell testers over the years working as a machinist and STILL don't have my own!

Thanks for the information, I was hoping there was something reasonable out there. My interest is in the hardness of saw blades. I recycle old saw blades and make wood carving knives from them. The blades seem to hold up to a lot of hard wood carving and keep a good edge.
Thanks again,
Lightman
