I know nothing, 'cept I need one pretty badly. I know there are different kinds, but I don't need the best.

What do you guys use, or want?

I use a hand held Ames and it reads real close on a couple test blocks I have. Is it as accurate as a full sized unit. I doubt it, but, it does give me a solid referance. Used to be able to find them for a couple 100 on Ebay, but, price seem to be up

I use ames hand held as well I tried ebay but kept getting in bidding wars and prices went way up so I went on practical machinist forum and ask if anyone had one they wanted to sale just so happen there was. the unit is accurate to the test blocks I have

Right on!! Thanks a bunch guys!! That definitely gives me something to go on. I will try to find one for sure.

Anyone else have any suggestions, or is this just what most of you use?

Thanks again!

I have the Wilson portable. It's a pain to switch the spring preload between Rockwell A-B-C, but you'll probably calibrate it and leave it on Rockwell C anyway.

The test disc that came with mine was Swiss Cheese, but you can buy them cheap on Ebay.

I bought an import benchtop model from Enco. I like it allot. It was kind a pain to get calibrated but has been consistant and reliable. They go on sale once in a while for around $695-$795. Free shipping too if you're lucky.

Keep your eye on ebay I scored a vintage Wilson for half the price of a new import and it came with every accesory including spare penetrators.
