Rabbit hunting yesterday took me to an off the beaten parth small town. Which had an old hardware. Which of course made me open the ashtray in my truck where I keep a cache of mad money for spur of the moment gun & knife buys. The Schrade display weas nearly empty, the top half of it filled with a brand new insert filled with the latest Frost china made traditional knives. The Schrades, mostly UHs, were nothing out of the ordinary, and the handles facing out were seriously faded from the sun coming in through the door. But there on top, sitting in dusty splender, was this great old ST1L display. Fantastic find... has a little turntable that the tool is mounted on, you can turn it from outside the plexiglass to view the tool. Made of metal and plastic, quality piece, really, with the price tag of $61.85 for the tool. A confab with the owner of the shop settled on a price for the tool, his last, and it's display. He even found the original box/sheath/paperwork. Funny, I have only seen these in recent years packaged in clamshells with nylon sheaths. This box is nice, even has the familiar white sleeve. The leather sheath has the belt loop sewed and riveted on in an X shape. It would easily last a lifetime. Date on the box: 1996.

I really enjoy these kinda finds. Have a bunch of them. I would have liked to buy the large black and white specked display case, but the owner needed it to show off those old UHs and those damned Frosts.

I've written of my like of the ST1L. It is one of the things I sent off to Iraq with my step-brother (he returned safe to us in November).

That's a very nice display! Never saw one around here.
My 98 shortline shows a MSRP of $79.95 with leather or nylon sheath.
Hope you as a good a day hunting!
Cottontails or snowshoes?

Looks like a woods or swamp rabbit.Ours get bigger than the farm bunnies.
They sure are easier peeled than squirrell ! I'd rather have them than chicken.

Phil,

Can you provide any suggestions for freeing up the blades in the ST1 and its ST5 cousin so they open more easily and without pulling out more than one blade simultaneously? I have tried oiling them to no avail. I spent an hour once just opening and closing the individual blades on an ST1 and the blades were still stubborn. Thanks.

Nope. I just call it a design flaw I can live with. I guess I am very forgiving when it comes to the products of my favorite brand name. That is not always a positive.

Nice find Phil! I have yet to score a cool display.
However, I did have a nice & Schrade productive weekend. We left Friday morning for Montana to visit our daughter & grandchildren there. We were able do make a few stops along the way to indulge my Schradeitus. :D
My wife bought me a late Christmas present at a Kmart store along the way, a STL1 for the sum of $49.99 + tax.

Along the way we stopped at an out of the way, old town hardware store and this is what I found:

As you can see, two new in box Frontier 4515-S. The price was $31.48 each. I have an old, badly abused one which I found in a pawn shop with the blade half ground down. I like the pattern, so was pleased to find two new ones.
As you can see on the box it is copyrighted 1977 by IKCO. Isn't this before the Schrade/Imperial merger? The lad at the store said they had been there a long time! Does anyone have an idea of a possible date? Codger?

I also made a point to check out the Ace Hardware stores (didn't find a True Value) and found these:

Both are Kamp-King though one is on the card of a Barlow. The date on the card that says Barlow is 1987 and the other is dated 1994.

Glad to see that someone else had some luck also.

Dale, the Imperial Frontiers are among my favorites. These were (are) great knives- high quality. Made 1977 to 1985. Benard Levine says he saw these being made in the Camillus factory in the late seventies (Albert Baer controlled the factory at that time. Mr. Levine further states that Imperial Schrade took the knives out of production as they were eating into Schrade sales.

At that time, IKCO (Imperial Knife Associated Companies) consisted of: Imperial Knife Company-- Rhode Island; Ulster Knife Co-- Ellenville, NY; Schrade Walden Cutlery Corp-- Ellenville, NY. All became 'Imperial Schrade' later.

Two basic lineups of these knives; The stainless steel 'Double Eagles' with wood handles, and the carbon (most models) steel delrin handled jobs. Many, many models, Larry compiled a list of them I can find if you are curious.

The numbering system: First two digits are the type/pattern, third is the number of blades, last digit is the handle type. It's a frequent mistake to read the vertical reading USA on the tang as part of the model number.

Also here is another pic, of a beautifully file worked backspring on a jigged delrin handled 4121 'Premium Jack' that came from the sample room at the Imperial factory. I got it on ebay; the seller was a major figure in Schrade history, so there is not doubt about it. I've only seen one other, a fixed blade skinner and the work was mistakenly contributed to Knife seller Bob Tice.

Don't get me started on these things!

Phil- Those are great!!!!
I had picked up the one in a pawn shop after reading some of your posts. Even though the blade was so far gone it still takes such a great edge that I keep it on my work bench for use in my shop. When I saw new ones I was ecstatic!!!:D
