This Mastodon handled behemoth is listed on a local trading site. Thought some of you collectors might be interested. Too rich for my blood.

So... what is the most 'valuable' series knife Buck's made?

I would say knives from the original custom shop circa 1982-1992 tend to be pretty valuable.
Anything Buckmaster or Harley Davidson tend to be the most overpriced.
Exotic handle materials and size tend to drive the price up also.

The above example has three of those 5 factors. Exotic handle, size, and HD.....

I'm with Roger,

Some of these old Buck custom Special order knives and some of the old Limited edition knives sold for way more than their current market value will bring. However, if you paid 5k for a knife like the one in your photo above how do you tell your wife years later it's not even worth what you paid for it!!!

Read the info below, it's for what I would call the most expensive production Buck knife ever made.

"To commemorate its second century, Buck is producing several special knives. Buck's Four Generations is a 12.5-inch subhilt Bowie knife. One hundred of the knives will be made, and offered first to Buck dealers as collectibles and marketing tools.

The Four Generations' guard and butt are made of sterling silver. The 5.25-inch handle is rare Amboynia burlwood with Mastodon ivory and sterling silver spacers. Embedded in the handle is the Buck 100th Anniversary logo in sterling silver with a pave of diamonds in each, totaling 1/4k. On the 7.25-inch BG-42 blade are 24k gold-filled engravings of Hoyt, Al, Chuck and C.J. Buck. Chuck and C.J. have autographed each blade".

Diamonds, Silver, and gold... I think the BG 42 is what puts it over the top though..

When I seen the local guy's asking price on the HD Mastodon I thought it was a typo. That's a years tuition at a decent college!!

I think I might find myself homeless if the boss caught me spending that kind of money on something I couldn't live in, ride on, fly, or drive.

Yes, its pretty, but it will probably break down on a long stretch of back road somewhere, or the diamonds will vibrate loose, or such.

Does it come with the HD logo dew rag as well?

Yes, I had to do that.

Hahaha!

No dew rag, but comes with a shirt that on the back reads:
"If you can read this, the (person who kicked me out for buying this) fell off"

So I made an offer on this nice Buck Custom for a little more than 10% of the asking price, explaining how outrageous his asking price was, quickly denied with these words added, "Are your correspondences usually this condescending? Thanks for the offer Merry Christmas." So it looks like it will stay in his collection!!!! Would love to see the 100th anniversary Custom with silver/gold/mastodon/etc......have the picture of it in the 2002 dealer catalog.....one of a kind D Guard and Sub Hilts are the most expensive I've seen as far as selling, but would have to imagine the Branded Bowie/Model 915(cat.#1717) from the 1992 catalog would bring a lot of money. The suggested retail for it was $6,480 on the 1992 Price list.......

Retail price for the 904 4 generations subhilt in 2002 was $10,000.00

Original MSRP for the Mastodon handled 907 HD Bowie was $1,000 making dealer price $500 in 1989. Street price would have been something inbetween. I found it is listed on the 1989 SP list with a build of 100 knives with the mastodon handle. 3,000 were made with the standard handle.
