I could almost have just put this in the title, but...Charlie, Jake -anyone- is anyone aware of a hj with a locking awl on it? I was using my Queen hoof knife's punch the other day, and had that puppy close on me a couple of times. Probably could have used a stitch or two, but I'm current on tetanus, so just bandaged and went on wit' my business. Now I wasn't exactly using it on the right material(antler, in fact) so it's all on me; it did however get me to wondering if such a marvel exists? I've got a locking buck marlin spike, but that would mean an unacceptable amount of modding, and for all I know it could be hollow. Never seen one in cross section. So, does anyone have one? Or, know where to get one? Not custom, my mind shudders at the cost :D, and my wallet. Over to youse guys;)
Thanks, Neal

Neal, I'm not sure if there's a harness jack that fits that description but I've seen an old Remington R3083 stockman with a locking punch that unlocks with a push button. It's an uncommon knife. I've owned a few of the old Remington electrician knives that have the same push button lock release for the screwdriver. A lot of modern multi-tools have a locking awl (often all the tools lock) but it is uncommon on old knives.

They ain't fancy, but the old Camillus made Cub Scout knives had a liner lock on it's awl. It's also got a bottle opener/screwdriver blade, but other than that it sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

suppose you can always mod one of those Camillus TL29's electrician blades to an awl, that locks

The Marlin Spike on the Camillus knives and a few others ( not all ) Also locks up solidly- you need to release this by pressing the bail over.
I owned a beautiful example of these. Google " Camillus Marlin Spike Knife".

I have seen a couple of old ones, and own one or two. I will find them.
Maybe it's about time for a modern one - - -hmmmmmm . . . . .?????

Jake - Thanks for the Remington lead, andnumber that speeds it up ;) . There is at least one modern knives maker who does a "Swiss" version of a knife, whose awl locks , I believe. Not sure if I want one or not. Looked at them a lot though.
Cory-I used to have one of those and completely forgot about them! I don't recall what the lock was like, but they go for reasonable, new or used. Good idea.
Mrknife-never thought about it! I have seen the wharncliffe mods for carving but never thought about an awl. I wonder if the hrc is the same for both blades? Really good idea. Recommend any TL-29 modders?
Ccman-Wasn't sure if the locking marlin spikes were solid or not(knot? sorry). May sound stupid, but ahh, just not a piece of info I recall running into. I have a locking buck, but it's completely round. Are spikeson other brands faceted , so to speak? If so, it would be possible to sharpen something on them or regrind if required.
Charlie: Of course we need a sfo locking model. Just keep us up to date, and remember:you heard it here first! :D
Everyone thanks so much for your ideas, at least 3 or 4 ways to go precisely what I was hoping for. Again
Thanks, Neal

Neal matey- yes the Spikes on this Camilluses are absolutely solid my friend- if you wanted to reshape I would do so on a coarse stone rather than a sander/ Grinder and mess with the Hardening of the Steel.

Duncan, may I call you Duncan? Are we talking the older sailing and boating style, or current line up? I will say the current line, modern tho it is, does have a model with a VG10 blade. I will have to price them out, on the bay if nothing else. Here on the prairie it, shockingly, isn't a very common model:). Any locator advice or other names they go by?
Thanks, Neal

Did you find it?

I saw this unusual harness jack ad today and thought of this topic. Do you have this knife? Do both the blade and punch lock?

I'm glad you posted this,Jake. I've been side tracked by the holidays and typical family stuff, but I'm still interested in doing this. I talked to a feller on a FB knife group, he goes by Stan Stanovich, who does/has done an armload of TL-29 conversions, and seems interested in the idea of an awl. We'll see about finances, his and mine! both, but... I also still like the idea of modifying a marlin spike-even just to put one "corner" on one to see how well it works. Seems as though any number of European electrician's and general utility knives have punches of this sort.
Thanks, Neal
Ps-how about it Charlie : a switch-awl? :D I'd sure buy one, might look good on that new 35 frame, or a full size canoe. Gunboat? ;) I'd buy one, boy-howdy!
