Harpy vs. Merlin

The Harpy has G10 handles and is tip-down carry.

The Merlin has the plastic (Zytel?) handles and is tip-up carry.

The Merlin is also priced about the same as the Delica and Endura, whereas the Harpy is usually about $20 more.

I had a Merlin for a while. It's a great knife but I sold it because I prefer tip-up carry and the Zytel handles. I'm looking at buying a Merlin but I'm having trouble finding them online.

I believe the Merlins were available in plain edge as well. Not sure about the Harpy.

I probably shouldn't say this since I don't personally own a Merlin and I would hate to be publically berated but....it's my understanding that the Merlin and Harpy got the same blade when they made the switch over to ATS-55. If somebody owns both and want to mike them, ok, but that's what I remember being told.

I have a Harpy and the handle is stainless steel. I have only handled a Merlin and obviously the Harpy is much more solid in construction.

Convenient that this topic just came up, I was about to post a question on this very thing…

I like the Plain edged Harpy. Unfortunately, I have only been able to find one with a stainless handle while I really want one with G-10. Now, I know the Merlin also comes in a plain edged version so I went in to my local shop today to compare the two with an eye towards swapping the plain edged blade from a Merlin into a G-10 Harpy handle. What I found is that the Merlin blade, while the same in profile, is indeed cut from thinner stock. It appears to be only about 80% as thick. The second thing I realized is that the pivot pin in the Merlin is a smaller diameter than the pivot screw used in the Harpy. I can fix the second but not the first so, I'm back to the drawing board.

Any ideas on where to get a plain edged G-10 Harpy? Even just a blade would be OK.

If you try, you may fail. If you don'y try you have already failed.

CJL101 - I think the most effective way would be to have a custom maker grind a thin plain edge from a serrated G10 version. We didn't make any plain edge G10 Harpy's.

I have a merlin and the blade does seem slightly thinner than the Harpy. It seems that the Harpy is flat ground and the Merlin is hollow ground. There is a grind line on the Merlin that isn't on the Harpy. Anyone know for sure?

I think there's a slot in the Harpy handle. . .what for?
