I have a set of Harry Caray knives that my father left to me following his death. They are a set with purple handles with dragon like designs on them - the blades themselves have a dragon like design etched on them. One is about 6-8 inches long and the other 4-6 inches. Both in leather hip strap. My father had for many years.

Where can I go to learn about these knives?

Hi Gobluegurl!

At first, I wondered what knifemaker would have the sense of humor to call his knives "Harry Carey" knives!

Oops!

Your father probably called them that, right? I believe "hara kiri" (sp?) is the Japanese (crude) term for "belly slitting." Another term, more formal, is "seppuku." There were very ritualistic and formalized ways for both men and women to commit seppuku. While men cut open their stomachs, I think women were supposed to slit their throats...I could be wrong abou this, or read an imperfect account.

I wasn't aware that any special knives were meant for it, though. I just thought any decent sword or tanto would do.
