I've been living in Germany for a few yrs and just started getting into German knives. I've been drawn to the small Solingen company Friedrich Hartkopf, but am interested in other brands i.e. German Eye, Bulldog, German Bull, Linder, Hen & Rooster. I'm looking mainly at pocket knives or lockbacks. Does anyone have an opinion regarding Hartkopf and how it stacks up against the others? I'm new to the forum and much help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the forums, JonnyK.

I'm not personally familiar with the firm but Levine's Guide states that their mark was "Winged Lions" and that they were in business from 1855 to 1957. The value code is listed as moderate (for mint knives) and the guide further states that they made some knives for Utica Knife & Razor Company.

Hope that helps some.

JonnyK,
Hartkopf is definetly still in business (http://www.friedrich-hartkopf.de/), I bought two Hartkopfs two months ago from http://www.roedter-messer.de/hartkopf.htm (perfect service from Mrs. Susann Frécôt and fast delivery). If there is a model you don't find on their site, send them a mail, most likely they can deliver it anyway.
Also watch http://www.der-boehner.de/artliste.cfm?gruppe=0402 and

There is also Löwen-Messer : http://loewenmesser.de/Download/Katalog-Loewenmesser.pdf and Otter-Messer : http://www.otter-messer.de/.
Löwen-Messer at Rödter-Messer, Otter-Messer from the maker.

That's some excellent info thanks Paragraaf:thumbup:

I'm also interested in small (under 9cm) lockbacks, preferably barehead style.any ideas any one?
