took a bit of a hike the other day, to harvest some materials for making arrows and whatnot...
fortunately its far enough into colder weather this nest was dormant

there were a few young does along the way

a few dogwood shafts for arrow making...in the background is the stand of dogwood saplings. this was a huge stand and i have since returned and gathered quite a few more.
tho its hard to tell in the pix, it was raining on and off all day. this thicket was a good place to hunker down during a fairly heavy downpour.

all that rain had the creeks running nicely

another score. this downed cottonwood still has lots of bark

gathered a good hunk of the inner bark for cordage

with some harvesting done and the damp and chill, it was time to head back to that dogwood thicket and brew up some coffee. for some reason i never took the time to take pix of the little hobo stove.....tho ive shared pix of it previously. this photo is the stove but another outing....

one little piece of cordage made from that cottonwood inner bark

the rest of the dogwood shafts are prepped and bundled for drying
but this one was never gonna straightened out as i woulda liked, so i went ahead and made an arrow with it. this is my first time arrow making and i need some practice. the lower one is local river cane harvested another day. like i said these are both just practice arrows. but i think i might be hooked making my own. we shall see in the spring when those dogwood shafts are ready.

hope you enjoy-thanks for coming along.

man I've got that same hobo stove, did you make that or get that from antig outdoors????

made it. someone here posted a link sometime last year. may have been on bushcraft usa. since that pic from last winter, i have replace the screen bit with crossed bits of metal that seem much more stable. and i can add wood all around if need be. will not forget to get pix next time im out using it.

impressive. nice to see someone make something else aside from more fuzzy sticks :o

thanks ya'll !
(dont show my fuzz sticks cuz theyre dirt ugly compared to some of you fellas:o)

Awesome find and pics. beautiful place.

There's nothing wrong with waiting xtra long for them to dry, but you dont need to. Have you sealed the ends? any sort of tree left in the round has high high high potential to split radially. best of luck with 'em.

good to know i dont have to wait so long to get arrows made. just going by things ive read here and theres. yeah i sealed em with some titebond glue. thanks

Us ounce counters can weigh a thing pretty accurately. Primitively, maybe you could rig a balance. But when the weight stops changing you know the wood has stabilized. You can guess too. Using dry heat, over coals straightening is going to cure them out a good bit. Indoors near fireplace, stove or register, even A/C is a good place for your bundle. Fletch a couple in a week and see what ya got.
