Harvey Dean Bowie

10-1/2" Blade of nice damascus, d-guard handle, engraved guard, ferrule, and buttcap, in a nice display box from a well known Mastersmith? Do you even need to ask?

In all seriousness, Harvey Dean's knives fetch top dollar directly from him, so I'd bet that price is pretty resonable.

Nice piece. I don't understand why the handle was made of wood. Such a display piece deserved ivory.

Maybe it's an older piece when nice wood was considered the choice for handles. I like it.

I think it's worth the money, although I prefer some sort of ivory on the handle. This buyer, as a few others, limited his selling potential by offering it only to US buyers. I'm from Europe (The Netherlands, not some backward country) and when I see a knife on EBay I like with this restriction I ask the seller if he would ship to Europe and most of the time the answer is no. That I don't understand (I can use PayPal, banktransfer, money order, you name it and I have it). I bought direct from a few knifemakers like Scott Slobodian, Roger Bergh and others from all over the world without any problem.

Can someone give me a valid reason?

Marcel

Marcel,

I have done one transaction with a collector in Switzerland. There really is NO reason, except that the seller just does not want to deal with it.

It was actually VERY smooth and easy. He paid via PayPal and covered the 3% fee. This allowed me to simply transfer the net dollar amount directly into my checking account, before I shipped the knife, and avoided all the foreign exchange headaches.

The US Postal Global Express Mail, is able to track it to the door and obtain a signature confirmation within 3-5 business days. It can also be fully insured.

Back to the actual thread. Here are a few photos from ebay of the Dean Manassas Bowie in question. 10.5" blade, 16.5" overall.

I think it's worth $3K,look at Bob Neals site ,and at Nordic knives. Both sites have Dean El Diablo style Damascus fighters for Over $2K,.When it comes to custom D- guards; They are Always more expensive. In the scheme of things there are makers getting that much for non-damascus knives. On top of that look at the knife it's Freakin' Gorgeous.

It looks like it to me, that's a beauty. Silver, engraved d-guard, I wonder how much Harvey sold it for originally. Probably not much less.

Maybe the buyer has had several ivory handles crack (like I have.. :grumpy: ).......

FWIW, I called Harvey and asked him about the choice of handle material. He told me that the original buyer had specified exhibition grade Black Walnut, so that the knife would match his custom shotguns.

Wood's a Good Thing. I had a subhilt specially made for my by David Broadwell, engraved by Ray Cover. You all remember it. I specifically asked for presentation-grade walnut, although I could have afforded the extra $200 for an all-ivory handle. I just liked it better..... Like this one.

Who did the engraving on this?
