Made my peace with organic handle materials long ago. They will move, crack or otherwise change over time - you can count on it. Proper care can help minimize issues as can living in a relatively humid locale. IMO, it's almost never the maker's fault and cannot be reasonably covered by any warranty. In 12 years I've had one handle refinished and two rehandled - a small number given the collection size. In each case the maker worked constructively with me and I made clear my desire to pay for the work. Happily for me, all three knives came back looking better and more beautiful than when they were purchased.
I bought this knife in 2008. Over time, one scale (originally beautifully barked, soft brown fossil mammoth) opened up end to end along a line linking three out of four pins. I don't think it would be fair to post 'before' pics but check out the 'after' pic below.
Sweet, huh! It's a very nice gent's "pocket knife" - a pleasure to carry and use. The design is saddlehorn trapper with a 3" W-pattern Damascus blade, engraved 416 bolsters, file-worked liners and of course, the beautiful new fossil mammoth scales. Thanks to Harvey for working with me and doing such a nice job.
