Harvey Dean Set (Almost...)

I picked up this little simple hunter in the collectors corner of the ABS Expo. I had been in the market for a Dean stag hunter since blade, and almost pulled the trigger on a few damascus pieces from different purveyors. I'm glad to have found this little carbon and stag blade right here in San Antonio, at a very reasonable price too :)

Since Harvey was in the room, I asked him about doing a little "scratching" as he calls it (engraving sounds more official to me.) He said he could do and would try to match the El Diablo I got from him at Blade this year.

Sorry for the poor pics, I just point and shoot. Sometimes they come out pretty good, sometimes not...

A better shot of the very nice stag:

And a picture with the El Diablo, an "almost" meant to be set:

I'm not sure when the engraving will happen, Harvey is a little busy, but I'm learning patience

that is a great set as is but i can see why you want the engraving done.

btw the Dean El Diablo is most likely the next big thing to get on my list of dream knives. What blade length is that one?

Eli,
That's a great looking hunter. IMO, I think those two will look like a set when the engraving is complete. I wish I could have been there to meet you and experience the show, but maybe next time. :)

Beautiful "SET" Eli, demonstrating how "patience" in collecting can pay off.
Amazing how well that stag matches considering the knives being made at different times from different raw material. Adding the engraving will only improve in my opinion.
You really have something special there and by being smart you didn't have to break the bank to get it. Congratulations.

Crossada, have you ever handled one of Harvey's El Diablo's? If not, I believe you will be impressed.

They are typically around nine inches +/-. At least most of the ones I have handled or owned have been. The length may have to do with the way Harvey likes to balance them. Because make no mistake about it, though some are very "pretty" they are fighting knives. Seemingly, being an extension of the arm and extremely quick in hand.

VERY cool Eli. Hope to see it after Mr. Dean does a bit of "scratchin" on it.

Congrats!

Peter

Wow, what a neat story this will make for the "set". It is amazing how they'll match when the engraving is done.

Be sure to show pics when the time comes.

Sorry to say i have not. I have wanted a Dean for many years now and would be happy with any. the el diablo seems to be his most talked about blade so that is what i'm shooting for. thanks for the info.

Thanks for all the compliments, I do feel fortunate to have picked these up within a few months time when the normal wait for Harvey's work is much longer.

This one is 8.5" of sharpened edge, 9" to the guard, 14" o/a.

And Kevin is correct, it balances like a dream, extremely fast and lively. I think you'd love it.

nice acquisition, that's a beautiful set!

indeed! a couple of months ago i had the opportunity to meet harvey at josh smith's big sky knife show. harvey had an impressive d-guard bowie on the table. he told me to pick it up, but i didn't want to touch it because it was beyond my means (but not overpriced imo). the fourth of fifth time i admired the knife, harvey picked it up himself and said: "don't look at it, HOLD it!". and, believe me, i was completely awestruck, that knife, although it had a 10'' blade, was perfectly balanced and felt light as a feather in my hand. quick and dangerous. and flawless! how i wished i had the bucks.

harvey is a true master and such a kind person! impossible not to like the man and his work!

best regards,
hans

Dean is at the top in my book and the El Diablo is one of the finest fighting bowies made bar none.

I am not a huge engraveing fan but I think in this case it is a must.

A set to be envied. Congrats

I'm reluctantly putting them back away for the night... But they got fresh air, a photo shoot, an oil bath, and lots of handling today. LOL

Thanks for all the compliments.
