I have decided to use and modify my OVB bowie. Call me crazy, but I cannot help it. The knife just calls for someone to carry and use it, since it weighs so little and is just the right size. I like the knife so much, I bought a Kenny Rowe tooled(oak leaves and acorns) leather sheath for it.
Having said that, I find there are a few things about the knife that I plan to improve upon. The main thing is the guard. Mine is sharp around the edge, and kinda bites into my hand when gripped. Nothing a little 600 grit sandpaper can't take care of though. Just going to knock the edge off.
Secondly, the wood itself(since it has been heavily Renwaxed)is sort of slippery. I do believe that I am going to send the knife to a company to have the grip checkered. Maybe an elongated diamond pattern on each side? Shouldnt cost more than about $40.
Finally, the blade itself. I plan on handrubbing a nice finish from the ricasso forward. Not planning on messing with the ricasso area, since I dont want to risk scratching up the inside guard area. I think it will look pretty nice when finished, with the contrasting finish directions. Opinions are welcomed, but I'm still going to do the modifications.
By the way, has anybody tried to sharpen their OVB? Reason I ask is this. Mine has a small section along the edge that is not exactly straight(a little wider in one spot) and has to be sharpened out. This steel is pretty hard! It's taking a long time to remove this section of metal, and I'm using the DMT diamonds stones. Not a complaint, just an observation. From what I've seen, this knife should stay sharp a good while. Plus, from handling and cutting a few things, mine is starting to develop a decent patina. Can you tell I like this knife?
