has anybody here used "intuitive eating" as a way to reduce unwanted body fat?

This is what I am talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intuitive_eating

It doesn't strike me as something new or as a fad of any kind.

Yes, I do realize that the way to a healthy body fat level is multi-pronged and that it takes several months and permanent adjustments.

I have increased the levels of physical activity, but I have kept the ritualized 3 or 4 times a day eating, and I am finding that I eat when I am not hungry and that in fact I don't remember the last time I was hungry. Eating just because the food tastes good, just doesn't strike me as a good idea. I will give this approach a try and assuming I have a healthy appetite, I really don't see any negative consequences. Do you? As a precaution, I guess I can always have on me a Cliff bar or something, when outside of the home, although I doubt hunger sensation is something that presents acutely.

Any experiences?

Not familiar with it, but I just dropped about 20 pounds (195 to 175) in two months or so following the advice in a book called The Primal Blueprint. Kind of along the lines of the Paleo diet. The idea is to eat like our bodies are evolved to eat. Lots of vegetables and fruit and meat. Part of the plan is to also only eat when you are hungry and only eat until you are full. I don't find it hard to eat this way and I think the focus on dropping grains (which our distant ancestors didn't eat) really stabilizes blood sugar and therefore reduces hunger. I've also had more energy than I've had in many years and have stopped taking all of the medication I was taking (migraine, GERD, anti-inflammatories, etc). I feel pretty damned good actually (except my back from a herniated disc).

Thanks for chiming in, and thank you for dedicating your first post to my question. Welcome to BFC.

If you could please, would you present us with an executive summary of Intuitive Eating? What are some key points?

Thanks again.

BG, I heard of the Paleo Diet, does it throw out all grains, including whole grain products? I tend to count on those for fiber, as much as on fruit and vegetables.

Yeah. Throws out all grains. It was a little challenging at first, but now I don't really miss them. OK...I was at a lunch the other day and they were putting hot bread and butter on the table. I missed that a bit.

There is a website for the guy that created the Primal Blueprint. Lots of accounts from people that have done it. I don't know if it is kosher to post the link, but if you google Mark's Daily Apple, you'll find it.

Yes, you may post a link for the purpose of supporting discussion as long as you are not selling.

This year I have gone from 198 to 185. All I did was to cut out the night time snacks, and make myself turkey sandwiches and drink water for lunch, rather than eating fast food and drinking coke. On occasion, I'll have some chips, too. An occasional piece of candy.

I think another key is eating till not hungry, rather than eating till full. Often, we don't realize how full we are till after a few minutes after we stop eating. Stop before you are full.

In the past, like you, at most meals I wasn't hungry. It was because I stuffed myself at meals. Now, I limit what I eat, and I get hungry before meal time. I've gotten used to the feeling and I like it. At meal time, I'm hungry, really hungry, which is what you're supposed to be.

Hi folks -

It is all about pie-hole control.

Monitor your calorie intake, and make sure intake < calories expended for the day.

You should eat less processed foods, eat salads and avoid foods from boxes etc.

I use caloriecount.com - it provides an easy way to record everything you eat - and also your activity level. You can also get nutrition reports and other tools. It is free and they don't spam you like some of the other sites do.

If you are like me, we were brought up in the USA without any self-deprivation - eat what you want. I tried to teach my kids to eat right and now my daughter takes my granddaughters to Mickey D's every day - they think mcnuggets are a diet staple.

Pie. Hole. Control.

best regards -

One thing that I am going to try is a large glass of water before every meal.

Interesting point about don't eat until full, but until not hungry. I guess it takes some time to get used to the difference, especially since I eat fast.

The don't eat unless hungry has translated to no breakfast for me. Around noon, I start to get hungry. Another big factor (for me) is chocolates and cakes, and that's pretty much useless junk with calorie numbers that quickly add up.

I am definitely motivated, as I tried some 34 pants yesterday, and had a pretty tough time pulling the zipper. My waist has been 33 for a long time.

Keep up with the excellent, real world advice. Much appreciated.

Another tip. Fast once in a while. Skip breakfast and lunch a couple of time a month. It's good for you. It also helps you tune into your body's hunger signals, so you won't eat as much out of habit as out of hunger.
