Has Anybody Modified A Thumbstud?

I just received a Benchmade 705 today and it looks great. I love the axis lock. Unfortunately the design places the thumbstud very close to the handle and below the side surface of the handle. This makes it very difficult to open the blade one-handed (for me, at least).

The mini-griptilian, by comparison, places the thumbstud 1/8" away from the handle and the handle curves down towards the stud. It is easier for the thumb to grip the thumbstud on the mini-grip.

Here's my question: Has anybody ever raised the height of the thumbstud or tried another modification to make the BM705 open more easily? Or should I just declare that it is not made for my hands and return it? I didn't want to go to a larger blade (the 710) because I think the 3" blade is great length for EDC.

If I were you and were that unhappy with it, I'd return it. If you tried to move the stud out and drill another hole it would take a carbide, or cobalt bit (and carbide bits are easy to break!). Ive never tried drilling a bm blade, but Im sure its like most tempered blades, tough! Some have taken a dremel and made there blades into a "wave". I do not know if you have enough room to try this, you may want to ask someone whos done it.

I only own the 705 , but I have also opened and closed the mini-grip. I can do both in a flash. Try to open it by pushing almost toward the tip of the knife. It flicks open with ease when the tension screw is properly adjusted. If you try to push perpendicular to the handle it is much slower. With a little practice you'll be annoying your wife just like me.;)

If that doesn't work for you I'd return it.
