Has anybody tried the new Rambo IV knife?

Yes I know its a movie knife and probably not taken seriously by anyone here, but when you look at it, it doesn't seem to be too bad. The makers (master cutlery and Hollywood collectibles) claim that it is hand forged from a single piece of 1060 high carbon steel by the same skilled artisans who forge high quality samurai swords, and then hand sharpened to a perfect cutting edge. Its also got a full tang handle.
Could this be any good? Or just another load of crap?:thumbdn:

I wouldn't buy it from Master Cutlery, because they don't have the license to reproduce it. They stole Gil Hibben's design. Not to mention the line about it being made by "the same skilled artisans who forge high quality samurai swords" is probably a load of balony. I wouldn't put it past Master Cutlery to say something like that just to sell their product. United Cutlery DOES have Gil's permission to produce the Rambo IV knife, and therefore sells licensed copies. If I was interested in buying one, I'd get the United Cutlery version. I think its made out of 1060 carbon steel, same as the Master Cutlery version. Be warned, however, that United Cutlery does not have a good reputation for quality, so the heat treat could be hit or miss. I don't think Master Cutlery's reputation for quality (or lack, thereof) is any better, though.

Edited to add: Almost forgot; Welcome to Bladeforums, the greatest (and largest) knife discussion forum in cyberspace!:D:)

Oh yeah, and here's a link to United Cutlery's website:

Way too much money for what you are getting.

Never mind thought you meant the original gil hibben made copies.

If you think samurai sword makers stop making 3-20 thousand dollar blades to do production work for Master Cutlery I have a few bridges to sell you. But seriously neither the MC or UC are worth the money. Even thought the UC ones are licensed they are made in to great of numbers to be a collectors item any time this century and will never have the value of a custom knife. Just get a real knife from a real knife maker or reputable company. If you just want it to sit there and say "hey I bought a Rambo knife" get the UC one.

G'wad!
Of all the Rambo movie knives, this backwoods chopper has to be the most absolute ugliest movie related blade ever!
It's a pity that the batch of knives carried by the "mercs", weren't marketed. Because they sure looked better, IMHO.
OK, the Rambo IV blade is not goin' to win any beauty contest; but I do realize that it is also probably the only Rambo the movie knife that could actually turn out to be a real workin' knife.
Had this movie knife bore no relation to Gil Hibben at all; it's my guess that a select few if any, would have even taken note of it existence through mere sight alone.
I secretly hope that the clone masters from mainland China would get their fingers burnt by duplicating this by the millions; not that I agree to the trade of illegal duplications...
Come in "John Rambo", they need you in Tibet already!

claim that it is hand forged from a single piece of 1060 high carbon steel by the same skilled artisans who forge high quality samurai swords,

This is true. It's made by the same guys that make those samurai swords you see on QVC-junk. If you want this knife why not make it yourself or get it made custom. Ask on the maker boards and I'm sure you'll find somebody that would like to make a sale.:)

If you paid close attention to the movie, you'll note that he wore a $25,000 Panerai. Nobody who wears a $25K watch carries a $5 machete.:D

All I know is Timex, so I didn't catch that. He should have ordered a Custom Busse Battle Mistress!

i'm amazed they even replicated the knife he used in that movie. i guess there's people who have the other 3, so they kinda "have to" buy it. i was so let down. not by the movie, i liked the movie, but i felt jipped when i saw the knife.

want one? just wrap some para-cord around one end of a lawn mower blade

No, that would be the Karl Childers model of "Sling Blade" fame. :D

"what are you doin with that knife rambo?"
"mmmmmm..... I reckon Im gonna kill you with it....mmmmmmmmm...."

Many thanks for all the replies here.:)
Kinda the answers I expected but not really what I was looking for. As the topic states, I am looking for someone who has actually tried the knife, who can give me an honest, open minded opinion rather than what they think its probably like.
I'll be honest, I don't know an awful lot about knives (yet) but I really like Rambo movies and it was the movies that got me interested in the subject in the first place. Six months ago I would have probably bought the new knife, no questions asked, but after reading discussions here, I have learnt that there is more to a knife than its looks and name. I know that what you are all saying is probably right, but I want to know before I buy because I don't want to pay a lot for something that is a pile of crap.
Having said that, I am greatfully listening to what everyone here has to say, after all most of you know more about knives than I do. Don't want to appear ungreatfull, just want to know more first hand opinions.

The replica knives from Master Cutlery and United Cutlery have not yet arrived in the US so nobody here has had any hands-on experience with them. Both are made in China. Both are simple full tang 1060 steel so I would expect them to perform fairly well IF they are properly heat treated.

As stated earlier, MC has a lousy rep and is selling Gil Hibbens design without his permission and without any compensation. MC has the rights to use the "Rambo" name but not the rights to the knife design. That alone takes MC out of the picture for me as I will not buy rip-off knives.

Gil did authorize United to reproduce his design.

I do have a couple of Gil's handmade D2 Rambo replicas and they are some serious knives. I watched them being made and I have no doubt they would stand up to anything I could throw at them. However, I plan to keep them as safe queens.

Welcome Plinthman:)

Honestly, I highly doubt you're going to find first hand opinions of the new Rambo knife on this board. Not to sound like a knife snob, but the folks that frequent this board understand that there are great knives that cost quite a of money, there are great knives that DON'T cost quite a bit of money, there are beater knives where you get what you pay for but serve a function, and their are knives that are not meant for anything beyond wall hanging. Pretty much anything from MC or UC are going to fall in the "decorative" category, I'm afraid.

It's not that the knife won't cut. It surely will, but there is no way to know if it will hold an edge, roll, bend, dent, or shatter with extended use. Honestly, it'll probably hold up just fine as far as not self-destructing. I would bet that the edge may end up being a little over/under done and chip or dent.

To be quite honest, you can get a much better knife for the money if you are looking for function and not just a piece of movie merchandise. Personally, I like the brutal function of the new Rambo knife. I thought it fit the story very well:)
