Has anyone actually been in a real life "survival" situation? If so what knife did you have and how did it work?

Hey all - has anyone actually been in a real life survival situation? And if so what knife did you have and how did it work?

I was thinking today about the concept of "survival" knives and how even though I love big survival type knives as much as the next guy, I cant imagine myself in survival circumstance with one of these knives. Not that it would not work perfectly - but any scenario where I could get into a survival situation I am much more likely to have a hunting knife or light weight hiking mora/SAK combo. Just wondering about others experiences. Thanks all!

I heard that feet are the latest organ being harvested for the black market, so maybe the wifey was looking to make a little extra cash to cover his knife expenditures?
Mmmmmmmmm feetloaf!

Most of my survival situations in the mountains were self imposed...in the Wind Rivers of WY and the Wrangells of AK. Got by with a SAK and maybe a cheapie fixed blade. (I didn't own high falutin' knives back then.)

Foraging berries, eating elk thistle, and catching trout supplied the rest. Never had to use my knife for handholds while climbing, or for fighting off bears or Sasquatch...though I've had more than a few bear come into camp in an attempt to maraud.

Back on topic,

uhh, not really a survival mode but I’ve been in some tight spots when my Buck 110 made a big difference.
I know there’s knives that perform better for different tasks and a smaller knife can’t do what bigger knives can do but then again even a really big knife can’t do what a saw can do.
There’s a lot you can do with a decent sized knife used in a smart manner. And how many times does a person go on survival outings where you select the items you will need? Usually you have to go with what you have at that time which is probably unplanned.
I have in my pickup some tools such as my camp axe, folding saw, compact folding pick/shovel, a machete and a small rocket stove. But I’m not always in my pickup when traveling, sometimes I’m riding with someone else. So what I’m carrying is what I’d have to use if we were stuck somewhere in the boonys. That would most likely be my Buck 110 and a 303 cadet. That’s something to consider.

Don't know if this is what the OP had in mind, but I have attended a survival school with a Swamp Rat RMD (the standard one), and it was the only one still sharp by the end of the school. It had been stripped prior to the course and it was wet the whole time so there was a bit of a rust issue... but other than that it was great.

Geez Les, at least upgrade the 303 to a 301 - the extra 3/8” could make all the difference!

Well sometimes I do have a 301 and also a 307 wrangler. But that 303 is a nice in pocket sticker / splinter picker that don’t take up much room. Not only that but I usually have my large vantage pro clipped in above it. The Buck 110LT is lite and easy to take along in the nylon sheath.

Close. I was mostly asking if anyone had unintentionally wound up in a survival situation. Lost hiking - stranded hunting - ext. something like that for several days with very little equipment.
