Has anyone convexed their BK9?

I bought a BK9 today. I'm thinking that it might benefit from a convex edge. Has anyone convexed their BK9 and what were the trade offs? I know that a lot of thought went into computing an edge angle to allow for the thinner blade stock on the Kabars, so I'm wondering if Ethan gave any thought to producing it as a convex.

So how would you compare the convex edge performance vs the polished stock edge that was in your link?

I kept the general profile the same. I knocked the shoulder off the stock edge, and convexed it. I'm pretty impressed with the coating. It's really smooth and doesn't bind the blade at all. The geometry of the primary grind is perfect, IMO. Once you convex the secondary bevel it cuts like a demon. :D

I convexed my BK-9's edge 5 or 6 years ago. It's been so long I don't remember what it's like with the factory grind. Only thing I can say is that it's worked for me for a long time and won't go back to the standard edge on it.

the only problem I have found with high polished convex edges is its damn near impossible to skin a deer..... but other than that convex outpreforms a V grind everytime for me.

I'm not trying to thread hijak but why won't a confex skin a deer for you? Is it because convexes are smooth? Do they glance off of skin and fat? I imagine convex edge are only good for chopping while the v-grind is superior for food prep and slicing. I don't have any experience with a convex edge though.

A convex edge will skin a dear just fine. Done it about 50 times. Bevel edges did not exist on production knives until modern manufacturing techniques. Hand honed edges are convex by nature. No one maintains a perfect angle while sharpening. There is a reason barbers use a convex edge on a straight razor. It's the sharpest edge! IMO :D

why not grind it to 220 or so, then strop the bur. That should be a pretty mean toothy edge.

My Kabar Becker BK9 arrived today. I have to say that the factory edge was pretty darn good. The coating was perfect. THe only thing that could be called a defect was the bottom edge of the tang had a pronounced waviness in it. For a knife like this, I don't really care about that. It's not like some $1000, collector, safe queen. The knife felt much lighter than I thought it was going to be. I have 7 inch blades that are a lot heavier. I even liked the little BK13 that came with it. I'd say if this knife performs decently, it could be one of the best bang for the buck, fixed blades that I own. Bottom line...I like it.
