Hi!

I was thinking about trying to replace the black G-10 factory scales on my BM 710HS with carbon fiber or a complementary color of micarta.

I was also thinking about buffing off that black coating. Sort tired of everything in my collection looking tactical.

If anyone has done either the blade coat scrape or handle changeover, would you please let me know any difficulties you had in the process?

If possible, could you post a picture of the finished product?

Thanks in advance;)

Before you try ANYTHING with the scales I would talk to a member called Buzzbait :) he has tried to "modify" the scales and found out that there is a spring not to far under the g10, look him up and talk to him about it. Hope that helped.

Here's a picture of my modification results. :(

It appears that the underside of the G10 scales are not flat, but have large areas machined out of them. It would take some wicked equipment to reproduce them, in my totally unknowledgeable opinion. And if you botch up a scale, it’ll cost you $25.00, as well as sending the knife to Benchmade for repair. I’d think over any modification thoughts about 7 or 8 times before trying anything.

I've seen new scales put onto a BM 730. It was done by Bandit awhile back. He put nickel or SS bolsters on it. I contacted him about doing some scales for me for an Axis AFCK but he said that the mill work required to create the spring cut-outs was just to difficult and he would not be doing it again. :(

I don't know of anyone else who does it but I'd love to :)

Frank Recupero has done Axis locks.
Have a look on the BladeArt webpage.
Such a knife was also offered for sale on this forum not so long ago.
A search for Recupero under "knives for sale" should bring it up.

I have shaped and smoothed the scales on a BM730.
It is best to remove the scales before attempting any modification.
This will allow you to see the milling indentations and thus that areas to avoid.
The scales are removed like any other knife, but BM frown apon this practise.

Here is a picture of the Frank Recupero Ironwood 710 that I recently acquired here.

This doesn't look like a simple job, but the results certainly can be spectacular! :)

Hey there Buzzbait,

Did you sneak into my house and take a picture of "MY" modified BM710? I did the same thing when I decided to customize my 710. I was seriously depressed with what I created. I ended up solving the hole in mine with fiberglass tape, black magic marker then thinned epoxy to fill the fiberglass tapes pores. It worked, but is no work of art, that is for sure! I wonder how much Frank R. would charge people like us for new wooden scales?

Bob Q. - That 710 just knocks my socks off. How much did it cost to put the ironwood scales on it?

I'm afraid I don't know. I acquired the knife in a trade. Contact him and see what he says. I don't have his email address here with me, but if you can't find it drop me an email and I'll get it for you.

Also, don't overlook Bandit for this kind of work. Both of these guys are first-class artists.
