Has anyone ever done 'outward bound'?

I did a one day team building where we climbed, jumped off a 30' pole and had to grab a rope, did an exercise with 10 people crossing a river with only two feet alowed to touch and had to be done in a few trips, climb horizontal poles that progressively got further apart as a team where thay were unsupported/swinging and about 7 1/2 feet apart at the top which was about 25' off the ground.
Overall the school was well run and with all of us being law enforcement it was really good for team building and believe me it takes alot for us to be impressed.
If the one day is any indication what the several day school would be like it would be great but, not for couch potato's, so make sure you know what you are signing up for.

My cousin was an instructor/leader type with them some years ago. I did not attend, however. If you have a question for someone like him, I'll be glad to pass it along.

i did a lot of offshore yacht sailing with the Ocean Youth Club when i was a kid, very similar to Outward Bound.

awesome program and i recomend it to any teenager.

I am looking into doing this for myself. They have adult classes - but I don't want a week long 'tough love' 'motivation' seminar taught by people that I have done more than.

I just want a cool week of roughing it - learning some things and getting out into nature.

I did it as a teenager. It was fun for what it was. Green River in Utah. I was 14 but did the adult trip. Took a lot of gear, took in a lot of food, didn't learn too many down and dirty skills. Did some rappelling, did some rafting, did some fire building (with strikers), learned how to make a cake out of canned blue berries and pineapples (it was damn good). Learned how to tie a few knots. It was a good trip (like I said, for what it was), but if you want to learn some skills, I would look elsewhere. Just my opinion.

TF,

Outward Bound is more about team work and motivation than skills

If you want a skills based course, then look for a bushcraft/survival course

A couple years ago I attended Dirt Time (www.dirttimeforum.com) and it was constant skills training. Also very reasonably priced. I think it is in June in CA this year.

Dexter,

Can I talk to you on e-mail to get more info. This sort of first hand stuff is what I need to make my decision.

When I was in the Marine Corps I learned how to work with a team and motivate myself and others. Not that I am some expert - but I get the point.

I want a place to hike, get away, learn some cool stuff, and get some miles underneath me. I don't need invented situations to learn how to motivate others or myself.
