Has anyone ever made a different [flat] base for their sharpmaker rods

For Xmas I got myself a set of UF sharp maker stones but I've been getting back to free handing more and on the quest for ever more refined edges.

Has anyone ever made a different base to use SM rods as a flat stone? The bottom of the sharp maker holds them securely but it can be difficult to get all the way to the handle with how wide the base is. I've made some HDPE bases for my DMT plates, now thinking about making something up for my UF rods (to I get around to buying a UF bench stone). Just looking for some pic's or ideas.

I've clamped my Spyderco Profile stones into a rubber stone holder and it worked "ok", but the profile stones are very thin (like 1/4" or so). I'd bet that the SharpMaker rods would clamp into the stone holder really well! I need to try that.

I have used the triangular rods in my rubber stone holder, for more stability I used two rods as a "base" for the one rod that I am going to use. You can bring the two "base" rods closer together so that the surface of the top rod sticks out just a bit. Worked ok. Concern is the pressure on the apex, even if you use only weight of the knife, the contact surface is pretty small!
