Has anyone found the perfect knife, khukuri?

I have some Really Great Knives in my collection, as well as some that most would consider junk.

In looking at the H.I.Forumites personal inventory I wonder if anyone has found the "perfect" khukuri?

The "one" that absolutely does it "ALL"?

What about other knives?

And does any such knife exist in reality?

If you could only keep 5 knives of any style out of your collections what would they be?
Tools such as a Leatherman can be included.

Yvsa,

I haven't posted my collection yet- will later today.

Can't answer your main question right now but I just got a HI bowie today and have high hopes for it- very impressed.

There's a great many knives I'm interested in, but haven't seen in person. And even some of the ones I own, i haven't had enough usage time to know which i'd prefer under certain circumstances. I have studied many "General Purpose" knives, and I cobbled together a fixed blade design with elements from Busse, Lile and some others. I'm having a maker do one for me in D-2 1/4 inch stock. This might be "it" or it might be a total wash out.

But a few candidates are:
Gelbu Special OR 25" Kobra
Spyderco Wegner (full size- THE camping folder)
Looking at getting REKAT SIFU and MT LCC which have great utility/combination use designs, even though they are marketed as "tactical".

But no matter what your list is, ya gotta have a khuk in there somewhere!!!

Tom

Perfect khukuri; 25" Kobra (surprise, surprise...)

Perfect knife; torn between the Leatherman and the Swiss Army. Had a Swiss Army for 30 years, use it every day. Had a Leatherman for 6 years, use it every day. On balance, probably the Leatherman

And if you're canvassing votes for the perfect sword, it'd probably have to be a nihonto wakizashi, beating a yataghan by a very short head...

Well, let's see. Out of the blades that I presently own, I would go like this.
1. GH Reiger Khuk, only real one that I own at present.
2. My 22 yr old Randall #18. It has been good to me over the years.
3. My Rekat Sifu. Totally awesome folder. Very carryable and fun to use.
4.SAK, Rucksack, good size blades and the main blade locks.
5. Super Leatherman, to cover any voids that I have left open.

Five blades hardly seems enough to carry at one time. I suppose we must show restraint in this politicaly correct time though. We would not want to scare the occasional passer buy.

Yvsa,

I'll qualify what that kind of knife is for me:

does well for the field expedient preparation of food, weapons, shelter, is itself a weapon if needed, usable for minor surgery, has a low maintenance requirement, and looks cool in a businesslike and frightening way.

You know, if you get a 18" or 20" WWII or ang khola you also get a littile bitty knife that goes with it. Would that be a disqualifier for the "one" knife concept?

The five knives I would keep all come from HI- if push came to shove I'd even let go of my commando style walnut handled Randall Smithsonian bowie

Always,

Finn

If I have 5 knives to choice :

* scandinavian puukko
* HI Baby Ganga Ram 16.5 inch
* 950 axis folder by Benchmade
* HI World War II 16.5 inch
* Laguiole (sentimental reason)

My five best do-it-all knives are,

1. Newest Murali Dhar GS
2. Good Old shop1 20" AK
It is not her fault to take the second position. Blame my poor mustles.

3. REKAT Sifu
4. my favored, long years rugged SAK
5. BM custom balisong with 5" tanto blade

... If I pick a khukuri, may I ask you to take the karda with it?

One of life's guilty pleasures: Answering 'What If' posts!
Which five of my knives would I keep?
Randall Thorpe Bowie and Thompson Skinner with ivory handles. (I bought them together and consider them a set, ie: one knife! (cheat!!)
Puma Jagdnicker nach Oberforstmeister Frevert. Stag...gold initial plate. Sort of a miniature White Hunter. It was my survival knife in the service.
Gerber Mark I. Old L6 steel model. Saved my bacon twice.
Original Leatherman tool...gift from my older son.
Case 4" Stockman double-ender. Bought it over 50 years ago, and it has done everything from cutting string to cleaning deer.
And last but not at all least: Gelbu, horn, 19". This is my most recent knife purchase, and moves ahead of a lot of nice knives to make the List of Five.
The list might have been quite different, but I have already passed on quite a few heirloom pieces.

I don't know if the one perfect knife exists either. Each has it's own functionalities and aesthetic qualities. I am, of course, fond of my HI WWII & Hanuman. I also have a thing for old Randall bowies. I like the old spirit in the Randall's- reminds me of the HI in some ways, as they have both seen very sad days of war. I usually carry a Benchmade folder.

Sometimes I like the feel of a khukuri chopping through (dead) wood, other times I prefer having a good fixed blade knife to whittle on wood and make things like bow drills.

Well- time to go get my humble collection out and start polishing after talking about them!

General purpose & yard work - 15" HI AK.

In my back pocket everyday - BM 350 combo edge, without the clip.

Used a multi-tool SAK for many years in the lab(s).

Had a Buck 110 (folding hunter) in my pocket during my younger traveling days in the military & merchant marine.

BM balisong, the "sentimental knife" - not really the BM, but the "deluxe" Phillipino butterfly knife I obtained there, and had for many years.

I don't believe one knife will do it all, not if you use knives a lot. Nobody's even mentioned cutting up food yet

I don't have the perfect khuk yet, Yvsa. But I hope to have it with the purchase of one of your forward-curving khuks. I know that's a lot of responsibility to put on you, Yvsa, but I thought you oughtta know that I'm countin' on you -- now if the kamis will just do their part! Speaking of which, any word when the first one will be ready for you to look at?

:
This is a question that I am even going to have a hard time answering even though I asked it.

Hopefully the YCS will be the "one" khukuri, but until that's decided I will stick with my H.I. 18"AK.
The "little" knives in the khukuri's don't count in the overall package as they are an integral part of the khukuri package. And with the YCS you get 2 really nice sized smaller knives along with the 3 cornered punch.

(1) H.I. 18"AK.
(2) Busse E-BM.
(3) Marble's Woodcraft.
(4) Leatherman Super Tool.
(5) ?????

Number 5 could be one of several, like the new Kumar Karda, Old Cattaragus 225 Q, Old Marble's Ideal
or perhaps my SAK.
I am partial to fixed blades, always have been, always will be.

I feel the choices I have made would cover anything that anyone would need to do, from building a shelter, to food preperation, and defense if it came to that.

1. 18" kobra
2. AFCK BT2 part. serr.(my first real knife)
I think the perfect knife doesn't exist. Just when I think I've found the perfect knife, something new comes along.

for me, knives have to have stood the test of time before they're eligible for a top-5 list. Today mine are:
1. Bladeforums Spyderco Blue Native
2. engraved Spyderco Almite Navigator
3. Shop #1 WWII, about 18"
4. Bura Banspati (I've only had it a couple months, but it's such a work of art that in this case I'm going to jettison my own mandatory-year-of-ownership eligibility criterion.)

Does this include kitchen knives?

1) 18" WWII
2) decent multi tool (Gerber)
3) Mission MPK Ti
4) Mission MPF Ti
5) 22" Ang Khola
