Liked my other Caly 3's so much I ordered the one i didn't have, a PE G-10. I Bought a CF and an SE here at BF, and fell in love with this little jewel of a knife.

Bought this one NIB form a large Spyderco dealer on the bay site. They also have an online store with good prices and a large spyderco inventory.

They are not open on the weekend, so I won't here back from them untill Monday(I hope).

I just went and read there return policy and it said knives with a problem had to be sent back to manufactor for exchange or repair. Or it could be returned, but they will ONLY give refund and can't swap for another knife. It said they would not refund there shipping cost to me, so I would lose that and my price to ship it back. Then I could order another....and take another chance. I know they sell to many to check each knife, but don't see why they would have a no swap policy???

I tried to clean a small spot, but it appears to be in the G-10???

I'll call the shop in the morning and hope they can swap it out since it was bought NIB from a large spyderco dealer. Not sure though if they will.

Has anyone EVER seen G-10 on a spyderco look like this...I sure havn't:confused:

The dark black around the pivit pin and at the other end is what my other G-10 spydercos looks like. The other side has it as well.

I know, I know...I'm going to find one good dealer and stick with them for all future Spyderco orders. By good, I mean one that would swap out if a problem.

I use Tom Berry (spydercovt.com) for all my Spyderco purchasing. He individually inspects every knife for defects or faults, so you get one without any.

That's an odd G-10 mark. Have you tried cleaning it up with some soapy hot water and a toothbrush?

Looks like it is used.
When i rub my fingers a lot of times over the black G10 i get the same as that.
It could also be dust, did you wipe it with a wet cloth?

It just looks dry to me. Balistol, Miltec, or a penetrating oil would make it look a lot better if you choose to keep it.

Yes, I tried to clean a small area. First with a liitle dishwashing soap, then tried a small spot with a good degreaser which should have cleaned anything off. Its like its in the G-10:confused: Its also dark along the handle edges, and at the other end. Like around the perfectly formed circles around the pivot on both sides. The whole slab should be that dark, like on my others. Its wierd???

I've herd you mention Tom. Thats great that he inspects each one:thumbup: I'll have to get in touch with him on my next.

I could tell when I first looked that it was not dust/dirt and was almost sure it wasn't going to come out. I did try to clean an area just to see though.

Its not used and is NIB for sure. Still had the factory oil on blade, and I've been around knives long enough to tell if used(I'm 48 and have been buying/collecting for 30 years). They also don't sell anything used.

My G-10 on my Millie faded a bit like you mentioned, but this is a very distinct pattern that could not of formed this way by use.

Thanks for offering the tips:thumbup: From the pic, I would have thought the same as both of you and suggested the same.

That crossed my mind at first. But g-10 won't absorb anything. If it did darken it I would think it would be only temporary untill it wiped off. I don't think it could penetrate the g-10, could it?

I don't have either of what you mentioned. I have CLP, and a silicon synthetic. I wonder if one of those may help?

G-10 is resin impregnated, it's not going to absorb anything. It will darken a bit, but then it will evaporate.

I use KABOOM Ultra Scrub soft cream cleanser to clean my G-10 and it works like a charm. Comes in a purple bottle. Give it a shot. It works.

If you look at the PE Rookie in my Police Lineup pictures in the groupies thread, you will see something similar. That knife was purchased as new old stock (the place I where bought it had had it in the display case for years), still with the factory edge, in the original box with paperwork. The proprietor is a friend of mine, and he would have told me if it was used. I have no idea what caused the marks, and I haven't found anything that will change them for long.

I did just get a responce from them and they said they would refund full price with no restocking fee on this one.
They had a no swap policy (in add, but I didn't notice it). Said I would have to send to Syderco or get a refund. Thought that was kinda odd since he had two more in stock.

So its going back in the morning. I'll lose a little on shipping and paypal fee on the credit, but thats no biggie...you live and you learn.
I'll order from Tom, Spyderco, or some of the others I've heard good things about here on BF from now on.

The pattern around the pivot indicates the darker color is caused by oil. I just pulled my NOS Blackhawk out and gave it a wipe down with mineral oil. Looks really good now but only time will tell how it holds up. It was at least as bad looking as yours before I started.

It will go back to the way it was as soon as the mineral oil dries up, and it will.
