I have always have some type of multi-tool on me.

I have had gerber multi-tools apart and it would be easy to replace the blade with a differant one.

It would be great if I could order a new knife blade in say VG-10 to replace the knife blade that is in my gerber multi-tool.

Has anyone every had a knife maker make them a better blade for there multi-tool?

I've wondered about that same thing myself, I wonder if any non production makers would be willing to grind a batch of blades for Leatherman or Gerber's, multi-tools.

Maybe the OEM's could offer a better blade, I'm sure they would have no problem selling them to owners of their respective multi-tools.

Something it Talonite, BG-42, VG10, ATS34-55, D2, or maybe even Damascus. :D

Well if it ever happens I'll be in line for mine, and I'll email, or post to let ya'll know.

I for once don't really care about the blade on my multitool. I normally carry so much more folders on me that it's unnecessary for me to use the blade on the multitool. The only time I seriously used it was on board a ship where all I had was Spydies (Endura 50/50 and Merlin PE) and I couldn't use it because it was full of tourists and don't want to freak them out. So I used the blade on the multitool instead.
Normally I try to carry at least one PC knife on me.

It would be too cost prohibitive esp. if manufacturers are expected to replace them due to wear & tear. There is a story at http://www.equipped.org/alterpst.htm by a guy who replaced the 50/50 blade on his PST II Leatherman with a Case plain edge blade. also he modified the file to make it removable so he could use it to sharpen the blade. Very nifty for ambitious and resourceful person willing to dedicate lots of time to it, however it is too much time and effort to make it worthwhile for someone to make aftermarket blades. To make the endeavour worthwhile you would need to cut, machine, grind blades for many kinds of multi tools, that would be head ache enough without adding different steel selections (plus some plain, some serrated, some 50/50, and some flat grind, hollow grind, etc, then clip pt, drop pt, wharncliff, etc). Then after all is said and done, how many end users willing to pay $50-100 and void their warranty, just to replace their multi tool blades with improvements that still don't perform as well or as comfortably as $45 Delica?!!! Probably not enough to justify cost of a CNC machine whjich is what you will need, since no one will want to do all that extremely precise work all by hand..........
Better to buy a dedicated separate folder, leave the multi tool blades as back-up!

Sorry....... :footinmou
But hey, don't you like the story of the guy that swapped his PST2 blade for a better one :)
My own preference goes in exact opposite direction, somethng companies could easily do- I would like to see Leatherman make a multi tool WITHOUT any knife blades!

I agree. I've sent an email to Leatherman about this possibility. They did answer back and say that they were considering it. Besides I have been asked by security guards in Federal buildings why I needed a knife if there was a blade on my multitool. (Try explaining blade design and quality to some of those guys.) In fact, I finally ground down the blade on a Pulse until it was the size of a small SAK blade. I can then explain that I only use it to open boxes. (Actually the truth.) I don't like the blades on multitools anyway, they're not very easy to use. Give me a socket adapter or wood chisel anytime.

Spot on.;)

How cool would it be to have a Chris Reeve or Trace Rinaldi (For Instance) custom multi.
