hello, i notice m tech has some good looking knock offs of very popular knives like the ka bar fighter and cold steel trailmaster and was wondering if anyone has tested them? i got one of the trailmasters two days ago (mtech bowie extreme 2 20 bucks) and am going to play with it more when we get unpacked. thanks for any insight

The bowie is awesome. I have had two, one i gave away. I beat the absolute crap out of it, threw it, cut down trees and it held a decent edge. I think its 440C. The handle got bashed up pretty fast I guess, not surprising I'm sure it's just cheap rubber. easily replaceable.

Mtechs are good for what they are, they were all I carried before I got a taste of higher quality steel.

My only M-Tech experience was a couple of multi-tool/locking folder sets. The multi tools seem okay, but they're bulky, hard to open, and not as well finished as my Leatherman products.
The folders were liner locks, and both were hard to release and close - though one was much harder than the other. The really hard one went to the trash bin.
The other needed to be sharpened. I was just learning my technique, and nothing sharpened up like that little guy. It took an amazing edge, but lost it after just a couple cuts. I cut some threads and didn't even feel 'em. I think the steel was so soft that I reprofiled it accidentally by holding too low and angle.
Anyway, after about 3 weeks of EDC one of the scale screws fell out. While I was at the store trying to locate the right size Torx bit, another one fell out, and I lost it. Rather than replace it, I just chucked the knife.
Replaced with a SOG, and have just gone up from there.
Anyway, I don't know what steel they use but if the same as the folder I expect it'll be tough (take some abuse without chipping) but probably not hold an edge all that well. If the ergos are okay and the price is right, just have fun with it!

Cliff Stamp has had good things to say about the Trailmaster copy.

YouTube has dozens of very positive reviews with that knife - the MT151. It's very to mod the handle to make it even better - eg by fitting Micarta slabs. And people who have had both often seem to prefer it to the TM.

The other MTechs that have especially good feedback are the hawkbill folder, the rescue folder with a belt cutter, and the "Rescue Team" 5 incher.
